For other cars where fuel efficiency is of concern it would be ok, but not for the Mustang GT. I'd rather not have the added complexity, it's just one more system that can go wrong. If they must add it in, I sure hope they have an option for the users to disable it.

Let's ask the question a different way:

What if due to CAFE standards, the only way you could get a V8 is if the default mode was 4 cylinder, but could flip a switch and have full 8 cylinder power? Would you choose this or go with Eco-boost?

This is coming. CAFE standards (and CARB in Cali) are forcing higher mileage cars on manufacturers thus they will be forcing us. I won't debate this sucks, IT DOES...but this may be a real issue in the coming years.

imagine the following: youre cruising along, enjoying your v8 sound and the grumble under the hood and Suddenly your awesome muscle car sounds like a civic.....

dont get me wrong, the ecoboost mustang sounds awesome, but then again the exhaus must fit the needs of 4 cylinders, not 8!
It would never sound like a civic, but it would sound like a helicopter. You'd basically be misfiring every other cylinder, and it would sound terrible.

I would consider it if it was toggle-able. Like with an eco button or something. If you're just cruising down the highway for a long time, why not get a little better mpg.

The reality is that it barely changes fuel economy in my experience because loads increase due to half power being available at a given load (throttle position). Engine size alone in a given platform barely plays a role in fuel economy. Case and point: Years ago I had a 02 4.7L V8 Dodge Dakota I used to average 18MPG with it. I had a friend with a 03 3.8L V6 and he got 18MPG. I had another friend with an 01 2.5L 4 cylinder and he got 18 mpg with it. All were standard cab, short bed and 2wd. Mine was a 4 speed auto (manual trans 4.7s are rare I could find one at the time). The other two were 5 speed manuals.

Jeez guys, the technology is there that allows the injectors on various cylinders to be turned off when the engine is under low load. When steady speed cruising on the highway for instance. My 2011 Accord had it and it was seamless. When you pressed the accelerator pedal it cancelled and you can't feel it. It's too quick. And since it only happened when you were off the pedal (cruising) you didn't feel the reduction in power. So it could be added to the Mustang if the CAFE standards get tight enough.

Ya no thanks, I had it on my '12 Ram 1500 and the only time I ever used it was on the interstate or on occasional long back road drives with no stops or hills. Past 75mph it never really turns on, probably due to aerodynamics at that point and the power need to push the truck. The hesitation around town in traffic drove me nuts though, so I always turned it off in those scenarios (thank god you could).

Had a super40 flowmaster on it and no, your car wont sound like a civic when it turns on haha.
