So I know other cars in the muscle/sports car segment offer cylinder deactivation so if you are just cruising your v8 becomes a 4 to conserve gas milage.

Is this something you guys would like to see in the refresh or next model year?

I'm personally not a big fan of it. It just seems too complicated that I have to imagine it hurts the reliability of the engine.

Also the lag when passing people must be real. Between throttle response and then waiting another second for the cylinders to come back to life. Anyway what are your thoughts

Seems to run just fine without it imo.

As for "hurting" the engine maybe someone else can chime in. But I know Challenger owners with high mileage no issues.

Dual Overhead Cams or even a single over head can design is more efficient. That tech is only really required at the OEM level on a pushrod V8. All of this happened very recently, in the last 2 years.

It honestly wouldn't be too bad for the coyote. You'd likely be able to tune it off while reaping cafe benefits. I don't think Ford needs to resort to deactivation though, as they make fairly efficient engines, and not just displacement monsters that produce same amount of power

Wouldn't that cause like...some pistons, valves, rods, whatever parts to fail well before the others?

Correct me if I'm wrong, but mechanically it doesn't make much sense. The 4 pistons have to move the whole car, plus the other non-working pistons' parts. Now, the Challenger does that supposedly to evade the gas guzzler tax, but what are the consequences in durability of the engine?

Anyways, without a clear understanding of this thing...sounds like hell no to me.

I'd avoid cylinder deactivation at all cost. My dad has it on his Chevy and has had the engine broken down twice, once to repair the right side, and a second time to repair the left side. When I had my Jeep the early Hemi models were having issues with cylinder de-activation as well. I don't see a need for it, and probably would not have bought the 5.0 if it had it. I've always wondered if it would change the exhaust note as well on cars with exhaust setups? Even without any issues, I would not want to have it on a sports car.

Had it on my 08 Silverado 126000 miles NO issues.

Wife had it on 09 5.3 Tahoe 99000 miles. After 3000 miles on new oil, 1/2 to 3/4 qt disappeared each 1000 miles until changed.

Currently wife has it in her 15 5.3 Tahoe - NO issues, no oil usage. GREAT fuel mileage for a big heavy box. Way better fuel mileage than my 13 5.0 F150. (but it has 3.55 axle ratio). Unless you see the change from 8/4/8 on panel, i cannot feel it and 4 to 8 happens instantly.
If Ford made it work as well as our Tahoe, I'd take on my F150, but not on Mustang...

No no no no no no.

Let me repeat. No no no no no no.

NO.

Just... no.

Had AFM in my Silverado and hated it with a passion. It's a gimmick and can be a major pain in the ass. You mentioned throttle lag... it's a real thing with cylinder deactivation. Not worth it when the Coyote already gets such good mpg.

NO.

Yes and No.

I had a 2014 Corvette Stingray that had it as a "eco" option select. I could not ever bring myself to driving a 4 cylinder Corvette, so I literally never tried it. Buy why would you want to?

I currently have a 2015 Tahoe LTZ with it and it is AMAZING. You can not tell when it goes in and out of 4 cylinder mode and it is 100% automatic. The only way you can tell is a mode on the dash that displays MPG's and it is a little green box with "4C" in it. It has NO lag and full power instantly.

My Tahoe gets 24 MPG on the highway...better than my Mustang GT!

I agree, on a truck or SUV it might be OK, if they perfected it. But I don't feel like cylinder deactivation has any place on a performance car such as the Mustang. The Coyote MPG is OK to begin with, and if someone needs better fuel economy they offer a 4 and 6 cylinder.

imagine the following: youre cruising along, enjoying your v8 sound and the grumble under the hood and Suddenly your awesome muscle car sounds like a civic.....

dont get me wrong, the ecoboost mustang sounds awesome, but then again the exhaus must fit the needs of 4 cylinders, not 8!

if it was offered in such a way as an eco mode to where you can deactivate it while driving normal or a sport mode I don't see what the problem would be other than the better fuel economy it would get which might interfere with the sales of the EcoBoost Mustang.
