OTOH, BMW did not put cooled or ventillated seats into the 2/3/4 series.
Well I paid 600 eur for the Mustangs cooled seats feature, and it doesn't work so maybe better not offer an option like this if you are not able to make it work decently. :tsk:

Is the TED also used to heat the seats, or is there a separate resistance heater? If the functions are separate, could we just cut off power to the TED without shutting off its fan?
That way cabin air at least would blowing up through the seats.

Yes, TED heats the seat.

I paid a lot more. In Europe, you have the ecoboost as the base engine so you just had to add the premium package.

In the US, the V6 is the base engine and there was no premium package for it. Thus, to get cooled seats, I had to pay for both the upgrade to ecoboost and the premium package.

So, I guess my question should have been...is the fan circuit the same as the power circuit to the TED?

It's all computer controlled, so I'm thinking Ford could re-program the controller to take away only the cooling function of the TED and leave the heating and fan functionality on the seat back units only. They might even be able to increase the fan speed some when only in the cooling mode to help just circulate cabin air through the seat back.

Probably because the Engineering Manager insisted tests be performed and then ordered the feature scrapped when the tests failed.

I'm a potential S550 buyer (eyeing a '16 Guard GT Premium and a few 17's if the guard is gone by the time I pull the trigger).

One of the biggest selling points to me is the cooled seats, I read this entire thread and am actually very disappointed to find this. I've emailed Ford with my concerns and asked if they are still working on a solution.

Anyone know if the 2017's have this rectified? I'm thinking not...

And about the BMW 2/3/4 BMW's not having cooled seats... The S550's rivals offer cooled seats in both Camaro and Challengers, I've spent a good amount of time researching the Camaro as well and haven't seen any threads on the Camaro forums about the seats not working, Just complaints that they're pretty weak... They have many many first run (optimistic) issues but the seats are not one of them. Didn't care to research the Challenger because a Hell cat is out of my range and imo is the only Challenger worth looking at.

You can also get cooled/ventilated seats in a Kia Soul...

I originally thought the cooled seats in my car did not work because I didn't feel "air conditioning" on my back, but I can definitely say they work for me. They are extremely nice in hot weather with the A/C off while doing canyon runs.

I would think the 2017 models have the updated hardware just like what the TSB would give a 2015~2016 model. But as you have seen, the TSB fix doesn't really give much of an improvement in cooling performance.

I spoke to my dealer and taking it in this week so they could check it out. If at the very least the fix stops the warming up of the back area, that would be something. What a true f**k up by Ford, cooled seats that warm up your back and a fix that apparently doesn't provide a full resolution to the problem. Not to knock on the mustang, I do love it, but in a large family full of German and Japanese cars, I was the first to add an American car, and I was warned of quality issues and sure enough I have this to deal with.

If you want to talk about "quality" issues, look at Takata and Honda. Two Japanese companies that covered up design defects and now have biggest recall in the history of consumer products. You call that "quality" and want to compare your dissatisfaction with a cooled seat to people dying? Let's put things in perspective here.

The cooled seats not working to your satisfaction is not a "quality" issue. It's a due to design challenges with cooled seats in genera;; it's difficult to get sufficient air into the seat back to allow the TED to work efficiently. Unfortunately, the side effect is that the seat backs don't cool as well as expected. My car is the same way; but you don't see me going crazy about it. I don't buy vehicles based solely on a meaningless feature like cooled seats, if it doesn't work as well as I hoped than all you can do is report the issue to the dealer. The dealer can then forward it to the manufacturer; if they get enough complains, that will warrant a service fix.

Some databases do not distinguish between ventillated seats and cooled seats

Ventillated seats = fan w/o TED cooling

Camaro has ventillated seats. They seem weak because there are no underseat ducts to precool the air driven by the fans

If memory serves, the original Hyundai/Kia ventillated seats drew in air from underseat ducts so they seemed cooler.

Cooled seats generally = TED (but some people misidentify ventillated seats as cooled)

Fusion has cooled seats which draw in precooled air from the underseat ducts and further cool it; the precooled air also prevents the TED from overheating. Mustang uses the same seats without underseat ducts. oops!

Challenger has underseat ducts. Thus, either it is like the Kias or like the Fusion, but it won't be like the mustang.

It does not need precooled air because the bottom cools just fine. The problem is the back is enclosed circulating hot air exhausted by the TED. Ford's fix is make the motor drawing fresh air from bottom of the seat but the hot air is still trapped inside the seat back.

It depends on how you define the problem. The same units work fine in the Fusion. Presumably, the precooling from the underseat ducts in the Fusion overcomes the problems of hot air trapping.

I also suspect that the seat bottom TED ends up preheating the intake air for the seat back TED, but I have no evidence.
