Hello everyone,

A little worried about the sounds I am hearing from my engine recently. Got the car near the end of last year and wow what a great car. Anyways weather was nice enough to drop the top down (mine is a convertible) and it sounds horrible. Intermittent tapping/clicking under the car making all sorts of racket when i drive past a wall or through my parking garage to the point I thought something was broken.

I am super disappointed as this only really happened near the 15,000 mile mark and has fresh/new oil. It sounds like the random interval BBQ tick?

I am trying to read though a bunch of previous posts but i hear BBQ tick or something about cams can all do this and I'm wondering if I'm stuck with a lemon. This thing is tapping so loudly with windows/top down in neighborhoods I'm worrying something is eating at the engine? I see some people saying im basically screwed if i read other posts.

Sorry if this comes off as uneducated or worried, because i am a bit or both right now to be honest and not sure how to proceed. Try and return the car, dump ceratec in (hope i don't void any warranty i have left) and hope the car lasts a couple years?

Anyway some insight from others who have had similar experiences and how they approached the issue would great.

Take a video of the sound for us if you can.
If it's just the bbq tick you're fine.

What type of oil is in it and how recently did you change it?
Does it mostly tick once warmed up?

So 2020 GT 5.0.

When was the last oil change and what oil? Is the car warmed up or cold when you’re driving in the garage or past walls?

Coyote is a bit noisy so I wouldnt overreact too soon, but…

Hello,

Yes, 2020 GT 5.0

I have done the oil every 5K, Amsoil, and oil weight per owners manual. Noise seems of started at 65% of the oil life randomly.

The temp of the car does not matter for this noise. I have been out driving it on highway, go near wall, its noisy. On cold start, drive near, wall noisy. Same amount.

If i hold the rpms up to about 1,300 RPM near a wall, hot or cold, its very annoying, tick tick,......, tick,......., tick tick tick,...........tic. To me it sounds like something almost clicking or when you click a cheap lighter.

Thank you so far for the responses, all help is appreciated.

Does this happen only when the car is moving or can you duplicate it while parked by revving the engine in neutral? You should inspect the brakes to see if they are unevenly worn or possibly have a rock or some debris stuck between the caliper and rotor that's making the noise.

Thank for the replies everyone.

Its when moving and when in neutral. I assume adding Ceratec kills any warranty added to the car? I have a good chunk left of warranty.

Don't want to lose it but don't want them ripping apart a 14,000 mile car to find a mystery noise that is assumed to be harmless.

I do not believe that to be the case. Ceratec has been the answer to the BBQ tick for quite some time. Liquid Moly is an additive in many oils anyway. I have not heard of anyone who has had a warranty claim being denied because of it.

Let me see if i can figure out uploading a video since a few people have asked.

If someone can tell me if this is the BBQ tick, and if it is, are there cars that BBQ tick that last into high mileage? Adding two on each side of the car near front tires.
thank you.
Please let me know what you think!

This sounds exactly like my old 2020 5.0 BBQ tick. Just add some ceratac and call it good. Absolutely hated that sound..

Sweet, will do asap. Alright 1 last question them I am closing/ending this thread and marking it to go into the sea of other BBQ tick threads here. Is this a concern or do high mile ones have BBQ tick or is this engine doomed to 30,000 miles max?

Happens. As others have said, Ceratec will fix it as it has done to mine, or swap to a good 5W-30 oil. Either will fix it—no need for both. I've been running 5W-30 for a while now, and the tick's been gone, at 105k miles. Personally, I suggest stepping up to 5W-30, or try out other oil brands—Pennzoil, Mobile 1, etc.

As has been mentioned many times, unfortunately that sound is normal.. Well not normal, but doesn't hurt anything, Ford will say working as designed. My F150 with the Gen 3 Coyote was VERY noisy like that. Drove 100k miles and was still running strong when I traded it. Ran Mobil 1 5w30 in it, put Ceratec in it and it made a big difference...

My 22 GT wasn't too bad, but I did use Ceratec and switched to Liquimoly Molygen oil. That oil has the Moly in it already.

I run Molygen in my 21 Mach 1, no issues yet. 20K miles.

Just a comment I read from a youtube video, makes sense, but don't know who the commenter is.

"The tick is not piston slap. The tick is oil pressure related. The best answer we have come up with after trying to diagnose everything from big end bearings bumping side to side, to DI noise, is that the tick is most likely from the "Hydraulic Lash Adjuster" on Piston #3. This particular spot is the most arduous path of oil flow to all the HLA's. The problem is, when the oil is cold on startup, there isn't any noise, because cold oil pressure is close to 40psi. As the oil warms up, the hot idle oil pressure drops. As it goes below 30psi, you may start slowly hearing the ticking sound get louder and louder as it continues to drop to 12-15psi at idle while the oil bypass is open. This low pressure drops even further as it has to reach the HLA's. By the time it reaches #3 piston HLA, the pressure is just low enough to cause the Adjuster not to fully inflate, and become lazy. This causes it to have a tiny gap between it and the lifter. So, in a rather non-synchronous way, it will tick as that tiny gap opens just slightly with each cycle of the lifter. As you increase engine RPM, the tick may become slightly more synchronous and noticeable until the engine RPM is high enough to make the oil pressure go above 30psi. Once RPM reaches close to 3,000RPM and the oil bypass then closes, this high pressure also fully inflates the HLA, and no more noise. The Ceratec increases the lubricity of the oil to a point where tight fitting HLA's will inflate easier, and make the ticking go away. The amount of Ceratec needed to stop the ticking varies with each car, as those tiny gaps slightly differ from car to car. My car only requires about 100ml (1/3 bottle) to make the noise go away. When I give it a fresh oil change, I start the car and let it warm up to hot idle. I then slowly pour in Ceratec while at hot idle until the ticking stops (~100ml). That way I can use one bottle for 3 oil changes."
Here's a compelling explanation, not sure if it's accurate but it seems to make the most sense to me.
