Hello everyone I just recently got my auto 23 GT, after having multiple EcoBoosts and had a question about something with trans/driveshaft/diff.

After coasting and applying throttle somewhat quickly, I get a slight jerk and clunking noise. Sounds like it’s something with the above components, but haven’t really found anything here about this exact scenario. Additionally, after going into a turn and the car downshifts, going on throttle mid corner will also produce the issue but with a bigger clunk/jerk. Does anyone else have this or know about it? My car has done this since 20 miles and is now at 200, but I didn’t see this as a characteristic of a new transmission. I don’t remember noticing it with any of the other 10 speed mustangs I had, but those had the ecoboost.

Thanks for the help

Also not sure if this is relevant, but the car was transported multiple times. Sent out of Michigan to dealer, brought back on a truck again. Ive seen posts about careless or unskilled drivers bending and messing up drivetrain parts after not being careful putting it in gear and such while transporting and loading/unloading

Hmm, could be several things.
First, it could be that the computer can't decide which gear to choose based on road speed. So there is a delay and then a hard clunk into the gear it finally chose.

Of course, have the dealer check the fluid level. Source of many problems.

Finally, clear your schedule and use Search. There are many many threads about A10 behavior.

Oh, and mine acts great, thanks for asking.

I've got a clunk sound in the driveshaft / differential of my 2018 EBPP, and it appears to be slop in the driveshaft at the rear u-joint. Assuming these cars actually have u-joints - there is a cover over the joint that I didn't remove to see what was going on. I can turn the driveshaft several degrees between the hard stops in whatever has the slack in it, and there is sometimes a loud clunk when shifting from reverse to drive. This comes up when coasting then getting back on the gas, too.

I have the same issue on my 23 GT. I've honestly just gotten used to it now. I believe it is the limited slip differential these cars have. They are electronically actuated and I believe sometimes they don't release the clutches at the right time. Mine really only makes the slight clunk noise while making a slow (5-10 mph) sharp turn.

The jerk will go away after your transmission break in fully. This won't happen until 1500-3000 miles. As @GTP said there is a ton of good info on the A10 on other threads!

Thanks for the responses
Do you think it’s worth having the dealer check everything around my driveshaft? It’s a pretty big clunk whenever I go off and on power again. Or, after a downshift, right when I get back on the throttle it occurs. Probably just natural with the cars, but maybe I’d have them check to be sure when I take another one of my cars there soon.

I also noticed this on another one of my vehicles with the 10 speed, but it is significantly less noticeable.

If it will give you peace of mind then absolutely take it to the dealership. However, unless they find something literally falling off or loose they will tell you its fine. They may not even check it if you say its driving normal just has this weird noise. Cheers!

Hello; One way to check the driveline slack is to change from drive to reverse and back again when stopped with the brakes applied. I have done this for cars with a drive shaft. If you keep getting a clunk have the universal joint checked.
On a car with 200 miles a worn Ujoint seems very unlikely.

There are other driveline components which torque one way under drive and the other during deceleration. Engine motor mounts at the front. Transmission brace. On the mustang with an IRS there must be a cradle of some sort solidly mounting the center differential to the chassis. I am not sure if a carrier bearing in the middle of the drive shaft.

Another way could be to see if the dealer will let you drive a different 2023 car to see if it makes the same noise. A good thing is you have over 35,000 miles left on the warranty.

Good luck

I haven't gone back in with my car yet after the first round of warranty repairs. My car was 1 quart low on trans fluid when I brought it in initially with my transmission concern. After about a week, maybe 2 of having the extra quart added to the trans I started experiencing nearly the same thing I had going on prior to it getting topped off.

When coasting and the vehicle downshifts (so far it has done this in normal/drag/mymode which I have set to sport) usually it's 7>6 and sometimes 6>5 on a coast I here a clunk noise and I can also feel it in the accelerator pedal. I have also been able to get it to consistently do this and then found out if I'm rolling slow like 2-3 mph and go from reverse to drive either way it happens 100% of the time as well. I could maybe let it go as normal doing that, but not on downshifts when I've been moving.

I've also had it slip at least 2 times on a mild acceleration going from 4>5. Usually I don't ever change the engine/trans modes till transmission is at least up to 150 degrees to avoid causing problems. Hoping next time it goes in it isn't the transmission itself and is just a valve body but who knows 🤷‍♂️

Thanks again to you both.
Mine feels more that there is slack somewhere in the driveline. One thing I noticed is when I turn quickly (dont touch brakes during corner) it’ll downshift. However when I get back on the power after the downshift I get the clunk and small jerk as if something is trying to match the new RPMs. I get this on my F150 too, but it’s very slight and basically not noticeable unless you’re looking for it. Or, go on power, coasting and letting the engine start to brake, then getting back on power, I’ll normally get the clunk. If I get on the power very very slowly after downshifts or turns, I can sometimes avoid the clunk but not exactly sure what changes.

Basically, it just feels like after turns, changes in engine RPM are causing something to not be completely matched with the speed of the engine. It’ll do a little rev (maybe around 200rpm) and I’ll get the clunk and jerk, and it’ll start going as normal again. This is how it’s been so far, at 300 miles now so hopefully it improves.

Also do either of you have a particularly whiny transmission? I know this is just a characteristic of it, all my other 10 speeds do it, but maybe the volume of the whine is an indicator of something?

The whiny trans is a normal characteristic due to the straight cut pump gears on them. Honestly I like it, sounds like the proper racecar transmissions!

Just took it out in sport mode for the first time, literally feels like I've been rear ended during those shifts.
