So i replaced both side rear wheel hub assemblies. Now occasionally i can hear a click coming from the rear driver side at low speeds ( mainly taking off ). It made the sound more before i replaced it of course. Any thoughts on what it could be ? The wheel hubs are from ford. Thanks!

I believe Ford put thrust washers on the 2015-2017 cars. Did yours have them and if so, were they in great shape or trashed? I know for a fact that my 2019 does not have thrust washers on the rear. Another thing you might want to do is do a search on here regarding clicking from the rear end. BMR and many others have been helpful in documenting causes and a fix for this. Good luck!

Yes it does have thrust washers but they were pretty much trashed. Think that might be the issue ?

I think it’s a combination of that and the retaining nut torque. BMR suggested a higher torque value than factory. I’m not sure if you can forego the thrust washers since you will be adding extra torque to the nut. That may be a question that BMR or KellTrac (on here) can answer for you though.

Great for some confirmation. I will be installing the thrust washers on my explorer as well, and thought, maybe its the same issues on the mustang!

I installed BMR 010 and 762, and ultralites, and FR track dampers over the weekend. I clocked, torqued, double checked torque, checked again, drove off and first "spool up" pebble flipping from under the tire sound. Eliminating compliance (per a ford master tech) its probably is exaggerating the issue. I have "womp womp" so the bearing is shot no matter what the tech tells me, and I dont want to screw with it again. Anyway, chances are your axle nut is not torqued correctly at the moment. I'd red loctite and go 150 + 1/8th turn, and see how it goes.

If its still there, then go thrust washer. I bought nuts, hub mounting studs, and thrust washer, to not have to screw with it again.

I did my noisy passenger side last night. First of all, as soon as I unbolted the carrier mounting bolts the axle fell out, I barely tapped the axle.

The Thrust washer was paper thin and beat to hell. I thoroughly cleaned everything, removed any rust/oxidation, blue loctite the carrier bolts and off we went. I red loctite the axle nut and torqued to 150 +1/8th turn, no noise.

I think on mine, axle bolt was loose, and it beat up the Thrust washer, bearing was fine, so I'll have spares on the shelf I guess.

I'll do drivers side today, just to be done with it, only took about an hour, so might as well.

PC_GUARD,
Would you happen to have the part number for the thrust washer?

Thanks for sharing the images with part #’s and visual of parts. The rear axle nuts and the thrust washers are common issues with some S550’s, so it will help those in the future looking for the parts.

I don't think thats the most recent thrust washer, should do the trick for now, but won't last as long as the newest version IMO.

Was for an Edge /Flex. The one I received is thicker than the one I am replacing. Ford parts department said it was the direct replacement part.

Old part size 0.021
New part size 0.051

Hmm... something to think about.

What if this is not a thrust washer at all? Meaning it does not have contact with parts rotating at different speeds on each face, like a true thrust washer would.

If it did the washer would probably not last a day, with the half shaft on one side and the non-rotating hub on the other *plus* the force of the wheel when cornering. Instead it appears the "thrust" washer contacts the half shaft and the bearing, no difference in rotational speeds. Why then are there problems and a new thicker washer was released?

Is it possible (as the Ancient aliens guy loves to say) that the splines are bottoming out before the hub/washer/halfshaft assembly is tight and there is play at the joint? The half shaft would move in and out, beating the washer like it was being hammered on. Like they appear after awhile.

Is it possible that way over-tightening the nut manages to squeeze the splines enough to compress the joint so there is no play at the washer?

Finally, is it possible that the new Ford washer, about 0,75 mm thicker, corrects the problem at the recommended torque?

One more: one poster noted that his 2019 did not have washers. Did Ford get a new batch of half shafts that were properly splined and the assembly fits as it should? *If the washer is truly a thrust washer then leaving it out would be a real disaster.*
