Can someone please answer me this? If you are driving your GT350/350R in sport mode are you legal in California and not subject to the thousand dollar fine if your car is stock?

Test it. The law requires 95 decibels or less. Either use your phone and download a decibel meter app or get a decibel meter device and measure it.

For comparison, vacuum cleaners or chainsaws operate at about 70 dB. 95 db is an approximate sound of:

  • a lawn mower
  • the inside of a subway car
  • plane flyover at 1000 feet
  • food blender less than 3 feet away
  • car horn at 10 feet

Car should be legal because even in normal mode the flaps open, but a pissed off cop that is uninformed is still going to try and write you a ticket

We are doing exhaust tests at our shop on Saturday

Its 4 different tests (ranging in rpm) to determine how they do it

Testing must be

20 inches away at a 45 degree position. Level 1 or 2 readers used.

1. at idle

2. at 2500 rpm

3. at 3500 rpm

4. At 75% of redline

This is then determining if it is of legal limit or surpasses it.

I clock 116 at 25 feet wide open, so I guess it's a good thing I don't live in Cali. I'd have tickets up the wazoo. I wish you guys all luck!

So this law isn't new guys. The way the law is enforced is though. There is no more "fix it or ticket" but just "ticket." Keep talking about it, the more it gets put on people's radar the more prone it'll be to being enforced........so SHOOSH!

Eh, who am I shittin', way too late for that.

I live in New York and the only reason why I bring it up is because New York, like California, is very blue. New York just made recreational marijuana legal and it wasn’t because politicians like smoking marijuana, (some do) it’s just a way to raise revenue. If in two years California announces that they’ve made tens of millions of dollars in revenue from ticketing people with loud exhausts, New York will soon follow suit.

The GT350 in sport mode is a LOUD car when driven.

But, keep in mind that the actual test occurs with no load other than engine friction. If you sit in your driveway and hold the revs at a steady value, the noise is much less than when accelerating.

So, if you are accelerating hard you will be over the test limit, but you should still actually pass the test. But the cop will just hear the very loud exhaust and may write you up for it.

I was 98 dB at Laguna Seca, and the measurement station is much farther away than a cop on the side of the road or in a nearby parking lot.

The point is, don’t be annoying when a cop is around. If you do get written up, you will probably be fine since you will be testing in normal mode under low engine load (so the valves should be closed) and will pass the test, but will need to go through the hassle of dealing with it.

Plus, if we start failing tests in california, Ford has a bit of a problem on their hands. Doubt we will see any issues with stock exhaust systems, tho.

Well if it fails tests with a stock exhaust on a stock car Ford will be buying back every car they sold if there illegal for on road use in normal mode regardless of throttle.
