I have a 2017 5.0 and recently installed a PMAS cold air intake (tune required) but have not tuned it just yet. I tried starting it after the installation but it would idle super low and then die out. Could this be just because there is no tune just yet or could there be another reason?

Yeah its most likely due to no tune the CAI would change airflow over the mass airflow sensor leading to those symptoms, just to be safe i'd take of the old intake and put the stock one on to see if it still is idling low and dying out.

100% the fact there's no tune. You have a wider tube pushing different flow of air across the maf. It throws everything off.

At idle the engine is pulling in the same amount (mass) of air that it did before. I can't see where the pressure drop of the stock air filter/intake vs the new filter/intake could be significantly different at the low volume of air the engine pulls in at idle.

I would look for something else like a vacuum or other line/wire misplaced/loose.

But it's not, because MAF size changed...so it's pulling more amount of air. If it was a no tune required intake, then your statement would be true. That's why intakes that change the MAF size require a new tune because more air is incoming and the ECU doesn't know what to do with it.

Get a tune. The car dying is 100% normal.

It will do that if you do not have a tune for a tune required intake. It flows way more air than the stock MAF calibration is used to and will cause your car to run funny and surge.

My mistake, I thought the MAF had stayed the same. Yep, different MAF = new tune.
