bmr vertical link issue

I can't get one of the vertical links to go into the bottom. Think is was caused by user error :shrug:

Cutting to the chase - Link was originally installed without one of the black insterts on the bottom, it was torqued to 129 that way. I noticed it had a little play when I wiggled by hand. Installed other Link, 10 minutes easy, but noticed it was solid, no play.

Preparing the box to put old links and noticed the black washer :frusty:

I think torquing without the washer has now made it too tight, and I am trying to come up with a way to pry or wedge it enough to get it started on the bottom. The spherical bearing moving is not making it any easier lol.

Any hints?

Use a rubber mallet to tap the lower portion of the vertical link into place.

Those Delrin bushings are sort of a PITA to get in there and easily snags on the rough edges of the LCA.

The spherical bearing keeps moving make it impossible - Think I will take your idea, and try and bang the old one half way in and let it sit... Hopefully, help it open just a little, all i need...

a small spreader clamp to fit an 1.5 inch opening would probably help. Hint for the creative designer types, just cut me in on some of your profits

Just attach the upper portion of the link but don't tighten the hardware yet.

Hammer away down below until the bottom holes line up, assemble, and torque all to specs.

I can't get the bottom started, because it too tight. I was able to get the old one wedged start a little, with some grease and a mallet. Think I will let it sit that way over night and have a go at it in the morning. Worst case scenario, I want to be able to get the old one back in. I may have really screwed this thing up, by juuuuuuuuussssst a hair lol

Install the bolt the opposite direction.

Once the bolt head is through, put a nut on the bolt. Then thread it until the nut hits the non threaded side.

Put a wrench on the bolt head, then turn the nut left loosey and this should spread it. Use good judgement and vwoolah.

And after all of this, look into getting a new LCA, bending load bearing aluminum ain't good.

Kelly, am I starting in the right direction? It was a b*tch getting this far. Had to take another bolt of to allow me to pull some and get a socket on the bolt.

Don't want to go any further if I am mucking it up

Mine slid right in when I stuck the spherical bearing in from the bottom of the LCA and lifted the link up to line up the top hole.

Getting that fatass 18mm bolt to fit from the back side is a new chore. I took the pick with the 19mm bolt you guys supplied, but scared to go all the way through with it an mess up the threads.

Better hope you don't bend it to much and fracture or break it. How much wider do you need to open it up? Take a 2x4 and cut it into a wedge about 1/32" - 1/16" wider then the link. Hammer it in place all the way through. The aluminum will have some spring back. Or take a bolt that is slightly smaller then the opening with a nut and install it between the opening and loosen the nut so it spreads the opening apart. But use a large bolt 3/4" or larger diameter.

Only need to open the width of 1/2 a washer (really small). I think I will try the second option here, versus trying to get the 18mm bolt through the back. I will have to take a lot of stuff off to get it in
