I'll see your BS and raise ya one...

I’ve been in petroleum pipeline business for about 31 years, currently working for the Kinder-Morgan Pipeline here in San Jose, CA. We deliver about 4 million gallons in a 24-hour period from the pipe line; one day it’s diesel, the next day it’s jet fuel and gasoline. We have 34 storage tanks here with a total capacity of 16,800,000 gallons. Here are some tricks to help you get your money’s
worth:
1. Fill up your car or truck in the morning when the temperature is still cool. Remember that all service stations have their storage tanks buried below ground; and the colder the ground, the denser the gasoline. When it gets warmer gasoline expands, so if you’re filling up in the afternoon or in the evening, what should be a gallon is not exactly a gallon. In the petroleum business, the specific gravity and temperature of the fuel (gasoline, diesel, jet fuel, ethanol and other petroleum products) are significant. Every truckload that we load is temperature-compensated so that the indicated gallonage is actually the amount pumped. A one-degree rise in temperature is a big deal for businesses, but service stations don’t have temperature compensation at their pumps.

Not my words....
Whilst temperature does have a very measurable effect on the volume of gas you get, filling up in a morning when the temperature is cold, as opposed to in the middle of a hot afternoon has no practical effect on the volume of gas you're actually getting because, in all but extreme cases, the temperature the gas will be dispenses is not related to the current outside conditions.

The temperature that the gas is dispensed is based on things outside of your control

The temperature of gas underground stays pretty much steady no matter how hot or cold it gets. This is because it's insulated underground.

Actual MPG is miles driven divided by amount of gas to fill up the tank. Anything else is BS regardless what the car calculates on the dash.
Unless you're filling up at the same pump every time, using the exact same procedure for when to stop filling, then you're introducing your own set of errors. Expecting that everyone comparing figures would be doing it the same way is stupid.

Whether the number is accurate down to the millimeter per milliliter is kind of moot when the tread is about comparing figures among people with the same make and model of car. It's reasonable to assume that whatever errors the Ford trip computer introduces, they're pretty similar among that group.

Here's the best I've done with a decent amount of time on the average. This was Detroit to Grand Rapids.

I've found that a lot depends on the gas you're using. On 87 I get 30.2 on the highway and 25 - 27 in the city. But when I switch to 93, I get 25.7 on the highway and around 22 in the city. Car is stock with no mods.
87?

I never once checked my KM/L. When it hits a 1/4 tank.. I fill it up. Maybe I'm doing it wrong?

I think it's interesting to see how far technology has come.

I grew up driving a 5.0 1989 Bronco that was rated at 12-16 MPG and 185 HP.

in 2017 we have a 460 HP 5.0 that is rated at 15-25.

Though I don't care too much about MPG, I think it's pretty cool to note what people are getting just for shits and giggles.

I think it is very interesting and am loving it. We have a 1991 Jeep YJ on 33's that will go just about anywhere...except past a gas station. On the other hand the GTPP gets over 27 on the highway. :headbang:

I gotta admit that I thought it was pretty cool getting 27 MPG on a 4 1/2 hour trip last year.

Most of my DD is like 15- 18 MPG. I just like stepping on it.

I don't see how some of you are getting greater than 25mpg with a GT. When I first got my car, I would get gas at 6:30am (must have been the colder gas!!) and got immediately on the highway. I was cruising at a constant 73mph with cruise control and the best I was able to get was 25.5mpg over 75 miles. This was in Orlando, with both a '16 and a '17 GT with 3.55 gears and manual trans using Sunoco gasoline. Once I exited the highway and started driving the city streets, the 25.5 would drop to 23.5 pretty quickly, even with gentle acceleration.

Oh, I also call BS on the statement that you get 39mpg at 60mph. You might see that as an instant mileage while coasting at that speed, but you will not see 39mpg at a sustained 60mph.

3.15 gears get better gas mileage than 3.55. Cruising at 70mph in 6th gear for me is only ~1550 rpms.

Driving around town is a different story. I drive my Mustang like it's meant to be driven so most of the time I average 13-14mpg. I only get good gas mileage on the interstate.

Must be your own.

I get 8l/100km equals 29.4 US mpg at 75-80 mph

at 60 mph I get 39 US mpg.

On cruise control, on flat highways.

If I drive like a jackass I get less

Your ecoboost will kill my GT in city fuel economy.

Call BS if you want, 39-40 mpg US at 60 mph on a flat stretch of highway. Cruise control on.

Don't believe me? That's cool you don't have to.

I usually get over 400 miles out of a tank. 449 is the best I've gotten so far.
