They call them stealerships for a reason!

Looking at local options for oil changes - the cynic inside me suspects that this "Intelligent Oil-Life Monitor" has been designed and implemented for no other reason than to massage the dealership bottom line.

FWIW I got the dealer to change mine at the 3000km service. It ran up to about the $280 mark. The indication was that the oil filter is in a terrible spot so it's more labour to get to it, but when I've seen someone in the US complain that they got ripped off at 100 bucks...

That's likely to be the only time they ever change it.

They need a 5W-20 synthetic to spec WSS-M2C945-A or ACEA A5/B5. Nominal volume 7.5 litres. I used a Nulon fully synthetic 5W-20 that met WSS-M2C945-A ($100 for 10 litres from Super Cheap.)

Note that it is just the oil that needs changing when the message comes-up - not the filter as well. (Means it's a nice simple exercise.)

Your inner cynic and mine would get along just fine
I wonder if I change the oil, take a sample of the used oil to be tested and it comes back as fine and not requiring a change if FordAU are going to reimburse costs?

Our Australian delivered Mustangs require 5W-30.

This has been decided by Ford Australia, taking into account of our climatic conditions.

This specification is listed on Page 194 of your Australian Mustang Owners Manual.

I have spoken to Ford Australia Technical Advice on 2 occasions, re the Oil Viscosity for our Australian Mustangs.

On both occasions they advised 5W-30, not 5W-20 as on the Oil Filler Cap.

They also advised a Technical Service Bulletin has been issued to Ford Dealers, advising to use only 5W-30.

I know, you can go on forever re Oil Brands and Viscosity.

I'm just stating what is in the Owners Manual and what Ford Australia have told me.

    That IS confusing!

    1. P194 of MY manual talks about the SYNC2 system, but p188 says "5W20 to meet WSS-MC945-A, WSS-M2C948-B or ACEA A5/B5"

    2. P26 of my "Customer Assistance, Warranty & Service Guide" says "SAE 5W-30 to meet WSS-M2C913-D or ACEA A5/B5"

What version of the Owners Manual do you have?

I'm pretty sure mine is the third edition.

Just checked, mine is the 3rd edition.

    Printed February 2016

Yep 5w 30 is what the dealers will be using. I've still got some more 5w20 as i bought it at a good price, once I run out I'll get 5w30. I'm not sure, the difference between the two is pretty negligible

Quick look around seems to show 5W-30 that also meets the correct specs isn't too common in retail packs. Looks like I'll be buying 20l drums again.

I recently watched a video from CJPP - They recommended 5W20 for the Ecoboost and 5W30 for the V6 and GT.

Edit: the video is on page 2 :)

Do we know what brand oil is already in the Mustang, is it Motorcraft synthetic blend?

I think my left-over 5W20 will get mixed with the next purchase of 5W30 :)

Careful, you need to look at more than the viscosity if you want oil that meets the specs Ford state if the WSS-M2C913-D or ACEA A5/B5 requirement is correct. Some of those don't.

I think we should have a list of what is compatible or not and what meet specs
