I'm thinking about the audio build in this car and I'm thinking about killing the rear deck speakers in favor of the mids in the doors. So have 4 channels, in the doors. pair of components 6-1/2 and tweeter and a set of 3-1/2 mids in the doors run off a 4 channel amp, maybe a 5 channel with a sub or a sub on another mono amp. I've built some systems but I've never done a front only sound stage. I'm more SQ focused in general and I think that's what the cool kids are doing these days. can anyone comment on front only vs front and rear?

I'm probably going to end up with a JL VXI series amp, either 4 channel and a second mono amp (not VXI, just a basic amp). Or a 5 channel VXI like the VX700/5i (I dont think 300w RMS is enough for a sub but I can get one for $700 so I might do it) or a VX1000/5i (those are ex$pensive!) so that leads me to a 4 ch with another 600W @ 2 ohm amp for a sub. I think 75w per channel for doors/deck is fine.

So with that type of build. Fronts only or traditional front and rear?

id keep rears, add sub. However I'd go with an amp setup, or module that allows time based spacial mapping and equilazation with a mic and software.... some better shops perform this as part of the setup of a new system,,,, having it dialed for where you sit and 360 balance, adding enough sub to fill in whats missing ,,,, priceless

Yeah unfortunately I need to do the tuning by ear or lack there of. I’ve got a permanent perforation in one ear drum so balance extra off for me. Timing can still be set by mic or distance but level is by ear for me. Obviously everything gets new amps. That’s one of the reasons I want to use a JL vxi amp with life tuning via Bluetooth.

I’d focus on the front only. The cool kids are using DSPs to get the tuning down to perfection. If you use a dsp, you tune it with a calibrated microphone and a computer, so no worries about your hearing.
