There is a lot of "talk" that the v6 is on the way out. But what truly substantiates that? Just because it was a late entry into the line up? Simply because Ford isn't offering the same goodies as the other two engines? In the end I think it'll come down to numbers. How many v6 engines did they sell in the US vs. Eco engines.
I think the main reason for this "talk" is because Ford added the V6 late in the development process of the 15. Ford didn't plan on offering the V6 at all in the early stages of the 15's development. It was only after they decided they wanted a lower starting MSRP that the 6 was added.

Well it's obvious that they're really banking on the ecoboost doing well. Ford 'rated' the V6 lower, didn't provide any of them for reviews, and doesn't offer them the nicer packages.

EPA fuel economy regulations are basically forcing auto makers to use turbo charged engines to reduce emissions but retain performance. The 2.3l ecoboost is just the beginning for the mustang I think.

The current V8 might be in the same situation as our V6 in the next engine refresh. Maybe it'll be offered so as to still have the V8 as an option but the main GT could be a turbo V6. I actually like the idea of a turbo 6. I think it's the middle ground to get best of all worlds.

I think the V6 will be here to stay at least a few more years given the sales numbers.

As Zack was saying, they seem to be starting to wean their customers off the NA V6. This could be for when they get the EB cheap enough to cover their bottom line and for CAFE requirements.

Now the V8 GT? I wouldn't be surprised if they start replacing it (or at least offer a parallel power option) with an EcoBoost V6 in the next 10 years.

"I'm betting the Mach 1 will be another tier of the mustang just like the V6, Ecoboost, GT of today. Basically it would go like this...

Ecoboost: 2.3l 330-350hp $24,000 starting price
GT: 3.0-3.5l Ecoboost V6 430-450hp $32000 starting price
Mach 1: 5.0l 475-500hp $38-$40000 starting price

With this Ford still has a high volume V8 model but it would be priced such that only car enthusiasts and people who have to have a V8 would buy it. Pushing the more "fuel efficient" 4 and 6 to the majority of its customers."

Yeah they're probably adding a turbo 6 somewhere in there. But half the current '15 mustang sales are the V8. I don't think they'll be too happy with their car going up $6k in price. : )

The V6 is selling well though so I wonder what that means for it in the next year or two. Does that mean it's a threat and they remove it or do they recognize the demand and add more options like premium package?

That's what I'm saying. It'll all come down to numbers. If they thought the eco would replace it, but the 6 keeps pace or outsells... it'll be hard to dispute actual numbers.

Is even any word on a Mach 1 to begin with? Looking at the SN-95 lineup, there was the V6, GT, and Mach 1, the top tow having V8s. I don't see anything like this even happening in the next refresh(4-5 years).

Funny you mention this. I've got a friend who works on Development for Ford vehicles and I asked him why they didn't use the 3.5L Ecoboost; apparently, it doesn't fit in the S550 well enough, and I think they did try it, but there were some overheating issues.

I then asked him about the 2.7L EB, he told me that it is possible, but there aren't any plans for it, yet.

In my opinion, all of this could have been avoided if Ford simply dropped the 3.7L, dropped in or developed a new EB V6, so then there would only be two options: Base EB V6, or GT V8. Ford would have their EB fuel economy, and we'd still have a V6 and V8 as it has been for the last 15 or so years.

People would still complain that the power gap between the two would be too close and the lower-priced option would be better, but we all know that you can make GT-power with the 2.3L so it'd be a moot point. They could even de-tune it if they wanted.

Just my thoughts.

I hate the whole the V6 is there for a lower MSRP...fine Ford...but that doesn't mean you can't offer it in Premium for those that CAN afford more options.

I think the V6 is a great engine, and a great option for me as I can't afford the Ecoboost. The payment is over $100 a month more on a lease for an ECOBOOST Premium for me, and I just don't see paying a bit more for a Base Ecoboost that basically give me pony projector puddle lamps and a power passenger seat. I went with the V6 because it suits my wallet, but will enable me to add to it, customize and make it my own(I'm leasing but will buy it out at the end) . I'll get my leather interior, rear spoiler, stripes, and different grill as I get money over time. I would've liked them to offer at least SiriusXM radio and a nine speaker sound system with sub.. Hopefully Ford will come to their senses and at least offer that.. Especially since ecoboost/V6 sales have been almost neck and neck..

Except for Foreign Markets they need the 4 Cyl as an option to avoid higher tariffs, etc. associated to V6 and V8's.

As a fan of the V6 I know full well that in order for this car to succeed as a world car it will always need a 4Cyl engine. I'm not adverse to that I just think that a V6 is a great alternative especially since the cars get similar MPG.

I have an Ecoboost in my 13 Fusion and although it took awhile the MPG has been pretty good and the engine has been reliable. I'm sure in time people will get used to it and should Ford offer the V6 well it's a win win for everyone!

I was curious for a while about how the V6 sales compared to EB and GT. Are the numbers posted here somewhere? I haven't seem them.

I know 89Trooper was tracking orders based on input from members here, but that's probably not representative of the overall ordering.

Fun Driver

Started out in 67 with a 66 GT on to 69 Mach 1 428SCJ RA and last Stang was an 08 GT Convertible. In between there was a 67 Comet Cyclone 427 8V and 71 Ranchero GT 429 CJ. I even drag raced a friends 70 Boss 429. This 15 Mustang is just fun to drive and gets 30-31 mpg at highway speeds; reminds me of the 66 GT as just fun to drive. Those other HP fords were neat cars but not much fun to drive around as always some kind of issue. Sure the 08 GT Vert with premium pkg was a fairly good driver but this new rear suspension sure beats that. Plus I was figuring if I get the itch to power up the HP 3.5 EB will drop right in; I knew Ford had won Sebring this year with it and there are quite a few F-150 3.5 EB available in wrecks. I have read the 3.5 EB was designed to make 800 HP and survive. Have Fun....I am!
