my brother is already giving me flack for it. His favourite sentence seems to be "German Engineering!"

The Mustang, according to him, is too unsophisticated, too thirsty, bad because its American and not German, too unreliable because its not German and then told me I should've gotten an Audi S3 instead for the same money. No thanks!
Your brother is sadly misinformed.

Anyone who thinks a Ford is less reliable than ANY German car is living in a fantasy world. As far as sophistication, I'll stack my 32-valve, DOHC, 4-wheel independent suspension, 4 wheel disc brake, computer assisted Mustang against anything he's got at the price point and win. An Audi S3? Don't make me laugh! That's a GTI wearing a suit, not a V8 performance car. A GT is much more competitive with an S5, and check the price difference there.

It's really irritating, the level of ignorance in the auto-snob world. I guess admitting reality would crush their dreams.

I've gotten a few "shoulda bought a V8" comments from friends kidding around, but then I just say that I have a Mustang that does 0-60 in 5.6 seconds and gets 30 MPG, and they drive econoboxes.. That usually quiets them down lmao

Tell her to research the total environmental impact of her Prius. I hate people like that. Also I guess she doesn't understand that your car has to pass emissions to be sold and the cats take care of most of the NOx (what creates smog). So many rebuttals...not enough intelligence for it to be understood.
Exactly this. All cars, especially thanks to Euro6 and CAFE LEV3, have extremely strict emissions requirements to meet. It'll emit no more harmful toxins then her Prius.

Someone should send her a photo of a Lithium mine for giggles. ;)

I had A diehard Chevy fan uncle who asked me why I bought a Ford. I couldn't afford a Chevy? I just laughed.

I wouldn't say its over engineering, I'd say its because German cars have slipped massively in quality, ergo reliability problems and a general feeling of being ripped off. Before I got my current Hot Hatchback I test drove a Mercedes A250. Same output as my Kia GT (200hp) but it cost ÂŁ7,000 (US$10,500) more! I hated it. I wont go into detail but anyone from Europe on this forum who has had the misfortune of driving an A-Class will know how shockingly poor it is. The Sedan version is the CLA in the USA.

Then, of course, you have BMW's problems that are so predictable and common you can tell at exactly what mileage the thing will breakdown, and then Audi/VW's constant electrical problems and Check Engine Light syndrome.

There was a news segment on the BBC a few weeks ago, probably over a month at this point, detailing the 10 most disappointing car brands to own. Every German manufacturer was there. No surprises.

My audi is 12 years old, and I bought it for 10 grand when it was 9 years old. Since I bought it, I put 21k miles on it, and I have spent around 6 grand repairing problems on it... What a piece of shit. And the worst part is, in 3 years and only 21k more miles, it lost 50% of it's value from when I bought it! Cost to own over 3 years has been 22k+ gas and insurance. I could have bought a brand new car and been better off. It's a turbo 4, and I get 18 mpg average, and I don't drive like a maniac, I am expecting moving to the v8 in the mustang I will use LESS gas.

You probably WILL use less fuel! Its no secret in Europe that the German manufacturers are sneaky bastards and know how to get around fuel economy ratings. Its been known and seen that the Germans tape up cars to make them more aerodynamic for testing and tweak their gearboxes before testing to make them more economical.

The problem is that the NEDC is so vague in what is and isn't illegal that you can't sue VW/BMW etc. for doing what they are doing. Even so, the British, Japanese, Koreans, French, Americans etc. etc. all post somewhat achievable MPG ratings.

My old Nissan Diesel said it would get 72mpg on the Highway, I got 68mpg. That's pretty excellent.

My Mum's Diesel AWD SUV is supposed to get 47mpg City and she gets 44mpg. Again, pretty excellent.

I'm supposed to get 28.2mpg City in my Hot hatchback and I get 28mpg. Boom, done.

Then we get to the German cars in the Family and... oh dear.

Brother in law's AMG? He's supposed to get 18mpg city and 29.3mpg highway. He gets 18mpg highway. 20mpg if he drives like a Nun. His city MPG is like pissing money away. Meanwhile his old Range Rover Sport hit its MPG figures perfectly.

My Brother's SEAT Leon FR (basically a Golf TDI) is supposed to get a whopping 74.3mpg highway. He gets 55. Yeah, 55 is still good, but he's supposed to get 74.3.

Meanwhile the Mustang GT is supposed to get 18 city and 30 highway, and I 100% believe that it will.

All those MPG figures are imperial, BTW, not American Metric. :)

Wow that's crazy, I was thinking about getting an older SLK (I love the 32, but maybe the 230) as a second car for the heck of it but most have 100k+ miles and I don't even what to experience fixing it. Might just get a 94-95 Miata and call it a day. If you drive easy with the GT you can see over 20, but there is no fun in that!

Side note on the Germans, my A4's been flawless other the stuff the original owner basically left behind (it was a NY car)

Other than rebuilding the trans, and getting new brakes and clutches/flywheels (bad throw out bearing messed up the original when I orderer), knock on wood its been solid. Not gonna lie, I still see Germans as problematic, but there are a few good ones out there (E36's I'm told can go up to 200k miles with no problem)

Slightly back on topic, before my dad saw the S550, he thought it was like the S197 and wasn't even gonna consider it, like my mom was, until they both saw it. Now I already can imagine being sent to a job site the day it arrives so he can pick it up and drive it xP

I know this belongs in the sister thread, but figure why not share
