The 03/04 Cobra had head cooling and plug thread problems, the Coyote had Cylinder #8 issues and still has the BBQ tick. Everybody is jumping on this because it is a 4 cylinder and therefore inferior. People need to just drive their damn cars and enjoy it.

OP, thank you for posting your experience. Mine is super similar. Purchased November 2014, so I would assume a similar build date, and mine also has 27k miles and on Tune+. I'm just not running a catch can. If these early cars are known to have a crappy engine design that's already been revised I really hope they're more lenient on early modified cars like ours. I couldn't believe they covered your car though. Huge congrats to you. That gives me a faint glimmer of hope that if something ever goes wrong they may show some mercy. Still terrifying though but glad to hear that everything came out alright at the end of the day for you.

Adam has mentioned new part numbers from Ford for months. There is no actual data on what was changed or if the new parts are "upgrades" to some of the older stuff. He has been talking about it for months.
Yeh, the rods listed on ford for 2016 are still the 34$ ones, compared to 5.2L v8 of 74$ . can't really tell part# as online just show generic 6200 one.

The thing is this 4 cylinder is pushing TQ of a V6-V8 with only 4 cylinders so there more pressure on each rod/piston compared to V motors, also longer time of pressure as its flat crank.
Even though this engine is based on eco model, they still need to address the power output even stock. Hopefully this gets squared away , along with RS model coming.

Might not be a bad idea to contact ford and bring this situation up to them and see how they respond, not dealers of corse, but ford motor co, maybe if we all wrote in with our concerns they would feel the pressure, don't know if this is a good idea or not, just thought I'd throw this out there.

What I find strange is that this engine blew at 27K. Certainly it was pushed to some limit prior and survived. I would think if there was a part design flaw it would have showed earlier. Perhaps Ford understands there is a problem and maybe sympathetic with our problem in the future.
Because parts just fatigue over time, unless the stress is way more than it can handle on first pass.
What happens, the rod might bend slight bit on first few times or piston gets small crack or hot spot were it degrades (can happen around valve reliefs).

Then after a while these just add up to where it lets go or with some added help like dropped spark-plug electrode , it progressive.

I'd like more info on the new HPFP. It'd be nice if its more reliable and has a higher capacity too.

Sorry to hear OP. You're in a club that is growing fast
Hopefully not. I mean I think I have heard of about 7-8 so far. There was to be 40k+ on the road. Its sucks when it happens to you, but its a first year platform so some issues are to be expected. Watching some of the Focus RS videos Ford acknowledged they had engine issues so maybe they have learned from that and are applying that knowledge to the mustang.

What are you looking for to figure out the build date? I never looked into it but I'm curious.

Mine was purchased in May 2015 and I can't imagine it sat on a lot for long.
Build date is listed on the door jamb.

This surprised me too. I figured I was pretty safe and this point and once I got tax money back I was just about to pull the trigger on mods. I was actually going to be purchasing a turbo back exhaust the day it blew. So I guess its better it happened when it did. If I had completed all the mods and then it blew, would have most likely been 100% out of pocket and would have cost a ton with the turbo and a/c needing replacement in addition to the engine.

Since the issue seems to be either related to the pistons or the connecting rods being the weak link should we be upgrading these parts prior to cracking the block. Could this be preventative maintenance at this point?

Could this be done by simply dropping the oil pan and replacing the pistons, rings and rods?

If it is fatigue of parts upgrading to stout parts may make sense, spend $500 now or 7K later?

Glad to see your motor was replaced . That certainly could have been an expensive bill. My question is why did you floor it in second gear to do a log for Adam? I recall in a previous post from him that he stated do not floor it in 2nd from a stop light and in 6th gear. Usually tuners want to see a 3rd or 4th gear pull. I know that is what I did on my previous tune. I am not saying you caused the problem at all. Please don't take it that way either. Again I am glad to see your motor was replaced under warranty.

So...production of 6th gen Mustangs began on July 14, 2014. Safe to say that there are currently many tens of thousands driving around (30 to 50 thousand EBM's?) The bulk of those driving EBM's are not driving the crap out of them (think DD for average, non-performance oriented individuals) and will likely never experience what a select few have, on this forum (BOOM).

If 100 or 200 engines toss a rod or ventilate a piston, i don't think this is excessive for a new engine in a new platform. Yes it sucks for those of us it affects and that's why warranties exist. If we mod then we take our chances. Sympathetic dealerships may help us ; those motivated purely by profit that aren't worried about return customers, might not.

If Ford does have an issue with this engine and have implemented changes to address them, that's a good thing. A quiet and subtle change to a few part numbers might indicate Ford tipping their hat. It's very doubtful that Ford would announce to the world that this is the case, however.

For Ford to admit to an issue would require greater numbers of failures OR the failures would have to pose a safety risk to those driving or those near the vehicle when the engine let go.
