There are bigger problems then gunning it in 5th gear with this engine. I will be posting my story next week once the repairs are done, but you can guess how it ends and I was in 2nd gear.

I hope they are taking care of you.

My choice of words in the original post were poor as well. I should have said I was going around another car as I wasn't passing in the sense of suddenly accelerating to get around them.

I do agree that the car was beautiful enough to make me buy my first American branded car in 20+ years. Unfortunately the quality is a constant reminder of why I stopped buying them in the first place.

I moved to Jeeps about 15 years ago, so these new Fords actually seem pretty reliable to me, but I only have 2K miles on mine. I'm actually quite used to pushing things harder than the manufacturer designed, breaking them, and then upgrading them. It's a shame when something happens when you are stock and doing nothing more than going past someone on the interstate and your engine blows. Never even had that happen with a Jeep.

How is this going? Any grief over modifications?

If there's no tunes to the motor or any mods - why wouldn't the motor be replaced under warranty anyway?? The OP wasn't "lucky" to have it replaced, it should have been replaced without question (and was)... And if they have to examine the ECU, so be it... I mean for crying out loud, the guy was DRIVING the car - just like any other person would be driving Brand-X AND passing another vehicle at same speed...

I mean, show me where in the Ford Owners Manual for these EB's where it explicitly states that the car cannot or should not be "floored" or "downshifted" into a lower gear to overtake or pass another vehicle... Show me.

Shit, my prior 2011 Hyundai Genesis Coupe 2.0T, I could downshift it or floor it in ANY gear, regardless of my highway speed and drive without ANY worries. That car was an automatic, it was only a 5spd auto trans, it had the sport mode for fly-by-paddle shifting AND the damn car had a factory 3.91 rear geared differential. I put 85k on that car in the 5 years I had it - it only had oil changes and NEVER any drivability issues!

So why is the Ford EB so damn fragile or should the question be - how is it that some folks on here (vendors or vendor backed) have been able to abuse the shit outta their EB's without blowing them up?

Does it come down to Owner error as opposed to driving a time bomb?

I looked at the Low Speed Pre Ignition - LSPI thread, and they are describing "Super Knock", but it sounds like standard pre-ignition to me. Cars are most likely to get that when in a tall gear, and WOT, so it doesn't sound like anything special to me.

It could be that the engine is plenty strong, only a software defect is allowing pre-ignition, which may not be audible.

Of course, its speculation until we know what the failure was.

Glad you were taken care of, really is a good thing you didn't tune the car.

Being a new engine, I "assumed" there would be teething problems as the cars accumulated time and miles. I have 12775 miles on mine and 99% of driving is Interstate, at 75-80 mph. No problems so far, But I also purchased the 7 Year/100,000 miles ESP Premium to cover any unexpected issues. I also take her back to the selling dealer for all service (small town dealership, nice people, same tech works on her). Hopefully, she will keep running as good as she is. Last Fun Run a week ago saw 35.7 mpg, over 170 miles. I do run full synthetic and have from the first change at 3000 miles.

Ill be keeping mine stock. I have the 6 year/60k ESP from Ford. I dont expect to keep the car past 2018 (may be getting a GT or another Ford/Lincoln Product) so I dont want to mod it. I like the car in stock form. Reading about these engine failures even stock and modded kind of scares me a little so I dont want to take any chances.

I also agree with another poster about flooring it in a tall gear and not being mentioned in the owners manual. I, for one did not know anything about LSPI before this car and didn't know it was an issue for turbo cars. If its such an issue why doesn't Ford put out a TSB or whatever to let owners know not to give the car full throttle in a tall gear?

Same stuff happened in the Mazdaspeed world. People would floor the car in 6th not knowing any better. It's bad on a motor like this because the small turbo makes a ton of low end torque, which can lead to a bent rod if a load is put on the motor in high gear. The tell tale sign of doom was often a vibration in the clutch pedal. And, if a rod was slightly bent it might not let go for a while, but one day you give it gas and zoom zoom boom....ventilated block. It's not just detonation that can kill these motors......

This sort of information needs to get out to the owners of these cars so that these problems dont become widespread.

What RPM is the Ecoboost making in 5th gear at 65 mph ?

Ford lists the Ecoboost as 320 lb.-ft. @ 3000 rpm. The rods and other engine components should be able to handle that power in any gear.

How many untuned Ecoboost engines have failed? I haven't seen many postings.

Has anyone bought an Lund Ngauge (or similar) and datalogged an untuned engine?

If you have the performance package, it should be around 2500-2800 RPM at 65. In 6th im turning about 2200 at 70.

I asked when I picked it up if they had any idea what happened and they said they didn't look too closely at it as their main concern was getting me back on the road.

And you had better believe that is a heaping load of horseshit. Once the block was shipped back you can bet engineers were tearing that thing apart like buzzards saying "Crap, another one?!"

The 2.3T isn't the only EB motor to have this problem. Focus STs and their 2.0T suffer from the same damn issues if you try and go full throttle in 5th or 6th gear, just go check out ST forums on the issue. I just assume it's all turbo motors and EB motors really at this point.

The only "solution": to not go full throttle in 5th or 6th gear! :headbonk:

if this is the case, I would expect to see a dozen or more "another one" threads on this site, but I am not seeing that.

There was the one Ecoboost Blown thread that got a lot of attention but that is just a one guy's car, and it was modded to some degree.
