Chevy guy here. I have a second gen Camaro in my garage that I've owned for the last 20 years, but needs more work then I have time for right now as I have a number of small children and other obligations. Was big into drag racing when I was younger (back when running 12s with a SBC and a manual was fast).

Trying to get back into it and looking to fulfill the need for the next couple years before I can get started restoring my camaro and absolutely love the styling of the new mustangs. Looking at used 2015-2017 Mustang GTs and from what I gather and can research it looks like with the A6, a "fill in the blank" supercharger kit, and some drag radials, I'm looking at high ten second 1/4 mile passes? Add some piece of mind with the crank/oil pump sprocket replacement, new driveshaft, and new half shalfs, and it appears these cars can even put down that power fairly reliably with the auto?! Am I missing anything? Seems almost too good to be true!

What are guys doing for the roll bars to make these track legal? Doesn't appear there is anything aftermarket that would be acceptable for IHRA/NHRA. Are you guys just getting them custom made at a shop?

Thanks for the responses.

High tens is very easy for auto supercharged mustang.I have a 17 auto with a procharger and e85 running mid 9,s full weight.Really depends on the track as i have never been thrown out for going to fast and rules have changed for these new cars because of the saftey equipment they have and how easy they are to make fast.I always run n/t,that way u dont have cry babies running up to the tower saying how is running that fast with no cage.

Running high 10s in a 2017 manual with VMP stage1(low boost) on 93 octane. No roll cage required for 10s at my track in a modern car. Low 10s in an auto is no sweat...
The coyote is bad ass

I was in a pretty similar situation when I went looking. Drove the 10 speed auto and fell in love. Bought it the same day. You may find that a stock 2018-2019 with the A10 is enough for you.( Disclosure.... I ordered the Roush supercharger last week LOL)

These newer cars are a different beast. Even the 6th gen Camaro's are going low 11's and some even high 10's with the 8spd auto, tires, tune, exhaust, and an intake manifold. But the Mustangs definitely hold bigger power better/longer/more reliably.

Not sure I will be a lot of help here as I'm not a 1/4 mile guy. However those are impressive times. I would love to give it a go. I was a tried and true vette guy and still love the C5 and C6 Z cars. I got my hands on a 2016 GT with a Roush and holy smokes, this is a whole different level. Mine is manual and that's just how I like it but I could see going auto if the strip is your thing. I was Pontiac guy prior but those are a bit pricey these days. But anyway, I bet you will love the Mustang and the Coyote on the street or strip. Best of luck in your choice.

I’m turbo and not supercharged, but went mid 10’s@135 on 20” street tires my 3rd pass with an A6 with 3800DA. Drives like stock and runs awesome. I also have a supercharged C6 Z06, completely different beasts. You fire up the Vette and the car immediately let’s you know you need to tame the beast. My 17 GT drives like stock and is completely unsuspecting until you hit the go pedal, then comes on like a freight train that pulls way past redline. Cant be disappointed with this car.

Thanks for all the responses. I would love to go manual (my camaro I raced I hd put a Tremec TKO in it), but it doesn't sound like the MT-82 is very highly regarded in high hp/supercharged applications, especially if the car hooks...Can't justify a $4K manual tranny/clutch upgrade on a car i just spent 25K plus on.

Now I just need to find a base model 2015-2017 with an auto! Trying to stay around $25k....seems like a few dealerships around here are around 30k for ones with some options. Seems a little high considering one dealership has a brand new 2018 base manual GT for $30k sitting on their lot with $6K worth of factory rebates.

Once grandma blows past you with her bone stock A10 and you're still stirring the stick you'll think twice.

I came over from the Mopar world and haven't looked back since (it's nice not having to go to the dealership once a month for recalls and bulletins). Anyway, coming from a pushrod V8 to a Coyote takes some getting used to (need forced induction to get that low end torque, which you already seem interested in). I'm N/A still but I've grown to absolutely love winding it out to 7k and sometimes beyond and not worrying about it one bit. You want an auto, which is cool buy what you want. But I can say the MT-82 has been through 40k miles of hell and back with me and is going strong so idk, guess I'll change my tune if it fails. As for prices for '15-'17 they're much more reasonable than $30k in my area, maybe it's regional? If so look a little further from home, and keep your eyes peeled. You might find a smokin deal yet! Best of luck to you, I hope you scratch that itch soon.

Well ran into a little snag...I'm 6'3 and just sat in one! Had to slide the seat all the way back then adjust the back to lean way back to the point where the back of the seat back was buried into the rear seat. And It still felt like my head was scraping against the roof. These things are not made for tall people (and there is no way you would fit a roll bar or cage in one with a tall driver!).

Sat in a 2013 which was considerably more comfortable. Still get the coyote but everything I've read sounds like the gen 2 in the 6th gens are considerably better (forged rods and better heads). Sounds like 650rwhp on the gen 1s is about it before you get worried.

Still have to take one of the sixth gens for a drive to see if I could live with the head room issue....unfortunately I live in upstate NY where it is still 20 degrees out and seems to be snowing every other day!

NHRA has a new rule for vehicles (2008-Present) can run 10.0@135 without a cage.
