I noticed my factory Yellow air filter is looking a little dingy at 5k miles. Seems a little soon to change it, so I thought I'd ask when is everyone changing their filters, and if you're keeping the OEM style or making an upgrade.

I see Steeda has a washable dry filter, but it's $100! 😳🤦‍♂️

Green Filters are cleanable, if you don't want to pay for replacements.
I've used them on a couple of Mustangs. Oh, and they're green.

I watched their video.
2 things come to mind.

1, It looks like 0 restriction from the green filter. I wonder if it actually filters?

2, The K&N flows the same as a paper filter. I wonder how they crippled it? too much oil?

I might try one and see if there is any drag strip improvement.

Take out the filter, use a vacuum to clean it out a bit and then pop it back in. Extends the life of the filter for $0.

Every 15k miles you will want to replace it with a new filter.
I stick with either MotorCraft or Fram filters and give them a vacuum suck every 3k miles or so but if you want to spend the extra $ for the green Steeda filter or a K&N filter then go ahead, they work just as well as well as the cheaper ones (as long as you clean out the cheaper ones more regularly).

Edit: I should add that I daily my mustangs and use them as comfy cruisers - so if you are racing the car or wanting high performance you probs will want to listen to someone else.

A lot of the "high flow" air filters don't filter as well as the OEM stuff. I personally don't care much about fancy colors or supposedly gaining 2 HP. And I certianly dont subscribe to the K&N snake oiled filters. I live in the desert and just need a good filter. In the past I've used AEM dry filters over the paper stuff. But these factory M1 filters actualy look halfway decent.

Great idea. Thanks. 👍🏻

I use an Airaid 861-399 dry red filter. Ford Performance sells this in blue for the Mach but I found it in red to match the car's trim.

Good old K&N in the factory airbox. Installed when the car was brand new and recently cleaned and re-oiled for the 30K service. It was the dirtiest I have ever seen one at 30K, so I'll be inspecting at 10K intervals going forward.
Maybe there's something new or different or better, but I've used them in cars and bikes for 30 years and they work for me.
