So I did about an hour worth of research before I post this question. If my car does start to have pinging issues would it be ok to add a gallon of E85 to a full tank of 91 vs using Boostane or Torco that has MMT?

Would the Ford Performance tune be ok with a splash?

Well like I said I am usually not lucky. Temps warmed up here in Ca and it has detonation. 3rd gear 2k rpm little punch and got the diesel truck rattle.

It gets over 100 here in the summer so it's either hostname and hope my cats can handle it or back to stock.

How did Ford Performance get this carb exempt on 91 with this issue?

As you have your tune on, you should probably try crank re-learn.

I had seen another driver in my area with PP3 at HPDE and his car was not pinging even though he was pushing pretty hard. So there must be something that will make PP work without detonation.

Ill hookup the procal today and check dcts. I did not get any cels after installing tune.

I think the suggestion was to go through the crank relearn even without any codes.

Also some have said after some miles on the tune the knock clears up. Are you in CA?

Oh ok. Yea im in Ca. I did switch to Chevron 91 after having knock with Shell 91. Seems to be running a lot better.

Wondering if all the additives nitrogen etc in Shell made me run leaner than usual. Or maybe it just adjusted after a few hundred miles.

Suppose to be mid 80s here next week so that will be the test.

Does "a lot better" mean no knock at all, or, it is less pronounced?

For me costco premium gas was definitely much worse. But while 76, shell and chevron were better, the ping was clearly there. Also, none of the brands was the winner.

I have not heard that diesel rattle upon initial tip in of moderate throttle anymore like I did running Shell. I do have what I assume is engine tick during tip in but I think thats been like that for years.

I wouldnt guess that is pinging. Like I said maybe its still doing it and its very faint or maybe the car learned itself. It only happened for the first second of half throttle. It didn't do it the entire throttle input.

Mine would ping at about 3/4 throttle, even with 93 (QuickTrip). I'm now running Lucas Octane Booster as well, and the pinging is gone. Not sure why mine seems to be worse than most, but the car runs fine and seems healthy. Might try the new Shell station that's supposed to open up near me soon, or go out of my way to get some Chevron. I doubt it's the gas, though. *shrug*

Whoa, your Quik Trip has 93?! Ours only has 91. I did fill up with 93 from BP today for 2.05. And, to stay on topic, no pinging.

Can you guys describe what pinging is and detonation? Do they sound the same?

I had the diesel rattle for a second 2k rpm in third half throttle. I guess that is the marble in a can sound. I pulled up youtube and couldnt find anything definitive.

Another posted it sounds like rocks hitting your windshield.

If you have ever been in a high gear at low rpm and then goosing the throttle, or just at low speed low rpm and goose it, that brief clatter is the noise. It does kinda sound like a diesel engine and you will know it when it happens. If you have a really loud exhaust you might not hear it though.
I used to have a old 429 and could tell when gas stations were not using premium in their premium pumps.........

Mine would almost have a very abrupt timing chain rattle sound right around 3k if I dipped into the throttle. I'd also get the rocks hitting the windshield sound at 3/4 throttle until around 4k. All of this only when the engine was fully warm.
