First gear on my car engages ridiculously high off the firewall. Damn near all the way out. Very frustrating. While 2-6 are practically an inch from the firewall.

This doesn't make sense. The clutch doesn't know or care what gear the transmission is in in regards to engagement point. If the vehicle is stopped are you saying you can change the clutch engagement point depending on the gear? If you are comparing the engagement point in 1st when starting from a stop to the engagement point of the other gears while you are already in motion I would say that is likely a circumstance of your perception.

Have you tried the Steeda spring ?
If you haven't give it a try and be sure to stretch it out from 2.50" to 3.25".
I've been without a clutch spring since day one. my problem isn't the clutch feel of engagement but where it's engaging. Mine engages all the way at the top which is so annoying. other cars I've had with hydraulic clutches at least had a rod on the back of the pedal for adjusting the engagement point.

I had my clutch replaced for the same reason. It got to the point where it started running almost 100rpm higher than usual on the highway, and smelled when I got home from work. I just got the car back a week ago. Tech said the main diaphragm spring seemed weak, and a few of the leaf springs were slightly bent. Probably that way from the factory, and just never noticed it until it finally started slipping.
He replaced the entire clutch and flywheel. The new clutch feels much better, and does have a little more resistance when pushing the clutch pedal, even with the stock clutch spring. I asked him about the Steeda Spring. He said you can use it, but the top of the clutch return has an apogee where that heavier OEM spring does a better job of holding the clutch in place and not slipping. So, I'm not going to bother with the Steeda spring at all. I'm used to the OEM spring, and actually like it.
