Just picked up a Dual SkyPro XGPS160 and tested its accuracy and precision. Figured I'd share the results.

The large meandering track is the Apple device GPS showing the route I walked in my house from kitchen to the front door. If you notice it puts me in the street and in the neighbors house a few times.
The smaller route at top left is while using the add on XGPS160. Waaaaay more accurate. This will be so much better for recording accurate lap times and autocross layouts.

Edit: the out of whack map on bottom right was created with my iPad which I just found does not have true gps. I repeated test with my iPhone and the results were better than the iPad but still worse than the XGPS160 by a decent margin. I'd say the iphones gps is sloppier by about 25 feet.

Uhm. Do you have a track in your house? Doing this inside isn't really a good comparison of the 2 devices. I'm sure it's more accurate than an iPhone, but I bet outside, in an environment like a track, they are closer.

Checked by walking outside and noted the same resolution with the iPhone as being in my house. I see the big advantage being for autox courses. Figured I'd share the info because I was on the fence about buying it and after seeing the performance improvement over the iPhone (forget the crazy path from the iPad) I think it's a nice upgrade for the track/autox enthusiast.

There is a huge difference in the amount of data recorded when using an external GPS at 5 or 10 hz. Most timer/lap apps tie the data recorded to the GPS position and time stamp so if you get 1 GPS position reported per sec then you only get 1 per second of all the other data points you are collecting even though the other inputs are able to produce much higher data rates. This is very evident when you add in OBDII data collection where 1 update a sec is just way to slow for meaning full data. Record with a 10hz gps like the XP160 and the data is fluid and much more accurate. Your track maps are smoother and more accurate because of the way the GPS data points are interpolated between GPS stored fixes.

Try it and you will never go back to a 1hz device for data collection again. I have seen raw race data collected on a 25hz device and it is another leap forward but way more data than the average racer or track guy needs. When you start do ride height sensors and shock position sensors you need the higher resolution but for logging engine data 10hz is very good.

What tracks are you doing this year? you can really get accurate date with a internal GPS.

Very cool. I figured at least some of it was roof interference and just not getting a clean shot to the satellites.

We do often forget that just because our phones can be used for something, it doesn't me they are the best tool for it, or even should be used for that. This is like the camera phone vs DSLR. :)

Thunderbolt, Lightning, VIR, NEW York Safety Track and maybe Watkins Glen depending on how the season goes. I was thinking of running one or two with MOE so maybe I'll see you around at Thunderbolt.

Ah I am doing a few NASA this year, I think I was planning on VIR with PCA though. Moe's schedule isnt that good this year. Shoot me what you are thinking about.
