Humid and in the mid 90’s today. Picked a great day for my AC to die.

I hadn’t used the AC since last year summer/fall as I like driving with the windows open. Today sucked as I did a little road trip down 84 into Danbury CT and no AC .

FWIW, It died one time on a Road trip to Florida Sept 2019 but it slowly died. I shut the AC off for 30 minutes ( while still driving ) and it started working again. Today it just didn’t work at all from the start.

It’s a 2016 GT with 24k miles

I bought this car new at a dealer in 2016 August. Think it’s covered ?

I kinda remember reading something about a evaporator core thingy or something else being defective and it’s not covered and it’s gonna cost me $1500 ?

also, do you think this is a dealer only fix ?
I go to a repair for 25 years now that I like and they’re really good,

Thanks in advance

Impossible to tell what is wrong without some troubleshooting.
No, it's no longer under warranty unless you bought an extended one in which case it probably is.
No, it's not a dealer only repair. Any competent shop should be able to fix it.
Yes, the evaporator thingy was prone to failure on the first couple of years and yes it can be expensive because the dash has to come completely out. $1500 or more would not be surprising.

Unfortunately you are going to have to bite the bullet on this one. Definitely sounds like the evaporator. Your local mechanic can do it. Just be sure he is comfortable with removing the entire dash. It can be a real job for someone who has never done it.

For the future, make sure to run the AC a little bit during the winter as well. The parts need to move to stay lubricated.

It could be caused by several things. Cheapest to fix would be a blend door actuator stuck in the "Hot" position. A bad compressor clutch could be the culprit. A quick check of the refrigerant pressures will tell you if there has been a leak. Worst case would be the evaporator core leaking. The parts to replace it are around $200 from Ford, but the dash does have to come out. It can be done DIY, I did mine, but it is rather involved. Expect a large labor charge from a dealer or independent shop..............

This is the largest thread on this site concerning A/C issues - most fall under the defective EVAP core. Others can be as simple as, A/C pressure switch failure, A/C clutch failure or A/C compressor failure.

If the car is diagnosed and it IS the EVAP core, you can call the Ford 800# and ask for repair assistance. They will most likely offer assistance with reducing the repair value since the S550 EVAP core failure is very widely known within Ford.

Compressor job should be a third (or so) the cost of the evaporator job. My AC died last week in 100+ degree temps, three hours from home, and I am pretty confident it is the evaporator in my case... count your blessings!

Well good to hear it’s not a EVAP failure… much easier to replace A/C components outside of the dash that’s for sure…

Update:
AC compressor installed and it works . It’s 95 degrees today and feels like 100. Got in the car it was so hot my sunglasses misted up. Nothing like a Black Car/Black interior car in the heat

AC came on but it wasn’t all cold for a few minutes. Took maybe 5/10 minutes to get the inside comfy but it did comfy.

They scheduled me for 2 weeks from now to test it all make sure nothings leaking.

It’s only money :like:
