My car poops on itself when I use 93 octane. From Shell, and I live in Texas i'm sure this is the actual stuff.. By poop i mean i get the " check engine" light.

V6 and V8 will have less than 5% performance loss between 87 and 93. Not worth the extra $$$ unless your track racing.

However, the ecoboost loses around 15-20% performance which makes it worth it. Here in Canada we have 94 which gives mine even more power.
EcoBoost doesn't take that big of a hit. It's more like an 11% drop in HP (from 310 to 275) and 6% drop in torque (320 to 300).

I dont know if this makes any sense. When I bought my Lexus from a GM friend of mine here in colorado the car said to run Premium. Granted this is a different car. My buddy said save my money, due to the elevation here and the overall difference between 87 and 91 he said it wont matter and I wont notice anything. It was true, I bounced back and forth and couldn't tell a difference. He did say I should never get pinging because the computer will make the appropriate adjustments, I never heard my car ping.

* Recommended fuel is Unleaded premium...The GT is a high compression motor 11:0:1 So it makes sense to run 93 or 91. But running 87 is going to bog the car down even though it has sensors to retard timing etc. Most high compression motors I've owned require unleaded premium.

I test drove 6 GTs before my purchase and I could tell some were sluggish in power delivery compared to the rest. But I suspected it could have been due to different octane levels 87 vs 91 or 93. And I test drove all of them in sport mode.

But if you know your car well you can always tell when there is power loss due to shitty gas. For instance I drove my STi on E85 in the southern states and those sates had shitty E85, my car was running sluggish. But as soon as I got to the Midwest, the gas was different and I could tell that the power delivery was normal.

For all those saying 87 is a bad gas, consider that in eastern Europe back in the day there used to be 78 octane gas for 2 cycle engined cars, they didn't need more as when mixed with oil (which was required, hence 2 cycle) it was enough to run well. I know that times change, but 87 by all means isn't a bad gas, just because it is the lowest tier in the US.

I was glad my dealer filled my request to fill up with 91 octane Chevron. No problems since.

Another part to my thread. I've always been told that all brands of gas are the same since this will be my first fill up. What gas station brands are the best. I usually use Sam's. Since this is my first high performance car I'm trying use the best so hope no one thinks I'm dumb about gas etc.

The recommended fuel is 87 across all the engines from the owners manual on page 128. Also the EPA tests with 87 unless the engine requires premium like an Audi.
2.3L EcoBoost and 5.0L V8 Engines We recommend regular unleaded gasoline with a pump (R+M)/2 octane rating of 87. Some stations offer fuels posted as regular with an octane rating below 87, particularly in high altitude areas. We do not recommend fuels with an octane rating below 87. To provide improved performance, we recommend premium fuel for severe duty usage, such as trailer tow
The website is recommending 93 in order to get the HP/TQ figures up in the chart.

What is that Audi compression ratio?

Look at the compression ratios of all the 3 motors for the Mustang and see the difference. Hence, a high compression motor is going to recommend use of unleaded premium.

Yes... you can run your whatever Unleaded regular gas but the ECU will retarding timing to prevent knock because the lower octane gas detonates before compression inside the cylinder.... thus your car will run sluggishly but very few might notice the difference.

The Audis require premium according to their website/manuals. Even the EPA/Fuel site tests the Audis with premiums.

With the Mustang, I drove a GT with 87 and didn't notice any difference at all..no sluggishness at all.

Im just going by the manual...if the engines are based on 87, then for the majority, that's all they need to put in it. 93 isn't going to do anything to save your engine/make it last longer. It's only for performance.
