5.0L Coyote Dipstick Markings

I've found that if the oil level is right at the top hole in the dipstick when hot, then it will be right at the top line of the hashed area when checked cold. So on the top end of the range, there are marks for "full hot" (the hole) and "full cold" (the line).

I would assume the oil quantity between the lower hole and the "full cold" line is 1.0 quart when the oil is cold, but I have not read that or verified that myself yet. Maybe someone here knows for sure. Not all cars are 1.0 quart between the low and full marks on the dipstick. I have a Tacoma where it's 1.6 qt, and had an Altima where it was only 1/2 qt.

Has anyone verified the oil quantity that the dipstick represents between the low and full marks? It's not in the owner's manual.

I'm interested to hear this too. I always assumed the top of the hash marks to the bottom of the has marks was 1 qt.

I'm assuming it is too, but as I noted in my original post I've had vehicles where it wasn't.

What's interesting on this dipstick is if you see the oil right at the top hole when fully hot, then let it cool all the way back down over night, the level will be right at the top line of the hashed area. I think of it as the "Cold Full" and "Hot Full" marks.

Back in the day when cars came with transmission dipsticks that is the way they read- "hot full" and "cold full"

I haven't verified it, although it says not to "top off" unless it is below the low mark.

It's a piece of shyte that's way to fragile and kinks way to easily. With the darn strut brace it's a real chore to get it in and out cleanly.

The hole is useless too. I was all geeked about Mityvac oil changes when moving from a dipstick-less BMW...nope!

It's easy if you delete the sound box. It doesn't look it but it's easier to feed the stick in from the front of the brace rather than the rear. Still a pain two handed job. if they just added 2" to it and angled it forward 15 degrees it would be fabulous.

thanks... or if ford went to a braided steel dip stick like Honda uses. it's extremely flexible and VERY stout.
maybe there is an aftermarket alternative as a direct fit replacement.

Yeah the dip stick is one of those little things that must be missed by all the engineering efforts. My Honda braided dip sticks works way better than the one in the Mustang. And then to just omit a dip stick for the auto trans is just one more way the auto makers are ripping us off.
