I dropped my car off at the dealer this morning for the dreaded 3rd gear lock out, and it's first oil change. I wonder what they'll do?
They said I likely won't hear back from them for several days. It's back to the FJ cruiser for me.

I would not advise anyone buy a mustang equipped with the MT-82 transmission.
The dealer says 3rd gear lock out is my fault. My opinion is Ford does not stand behind their products. I'm angry because I put a FAT down payment on this car and will lose out monetarily. That said, I'll trade in this rolling pile for a drivable vehicle ASAP.

What did they claim you did to cause the issue?

What are you saying is "3rd gear lockout" and how are they saying it's your fault? And if you have a 2023, it's the mt82-d4.

Usually you don't get the lockout unless you're talking high rpm shifts which can be due to either the clutch/shifter linkage play or a bit of both. How are you experiencing 3rd gear lockout already at your first oil change? It wouldn't even be broken in yet.

Iterations of the mt82 have been around for quite a while now and plenty of us have been using them.

I've experienced 3rd gear lockout exactly once in my 2019 (MT82-D4), and it was user error. You can't shift these cars ham-fisted and expect them to cooperate. This isn't a MT-82 specific issue either, I remember hearing the same about New Edge and S197 back in the day.

To go even further, this transmission feels lightyears better than the Getrag (same manufacturer) 6 speed in my previous BMW 335i.

I do 1-2-3 pulls shifting at 7k+ almost every time I drive my car and never get lockout, maybe I got lucky

This issue only happens from 2nd to 3rd gear at 4-5k RPM, usually while getting on the freeway. Not in any other gear or at any other RPM.

I took the car in for it's first oil change and described this to the service advisor.

At first the techs could not duplicate it. In their invoice statement to me it say's how they tried shifting from 2nd to 3rd at 7K RPM and it shifted perfectly.

Even though it should be able to do it, I don't shift at 7k RPM. Anyway, upon the request of the service advisor, I drove to the dealership and gave their mechanic a ride and showed them the grind a single time at about 4.5K RPM.

They said they'd investigate further but they then waited a few days to tell me it's normal for your car to not go into gear and accused me of "speed shifting". They then charged me 255.00 bucks for my trouble.

I'm sure there are plenty of MT-82 transmissions working flawlessly but also an unacceptable level of failure. Because of this, I do not recommend anyone buy an mt-82 equipped mustang. Too bad they don't use Tremec across the board.

Anyway, after contacting the dealer and service dept. They are trying to help get me into a Black 2024 automatic. I don't race around anyway, I just wanted a Mustang and I hope this s650 will be ok.

Hope this helps someone.

This seems very anecdotal for such a strong recommendation...especially with such little miles.

Typically the lockout issue most have is due to high rpm quick shifts due to flex in the shifter linkage or clutch. I'm not sure I've ever heard this happening on a normal or slow 4k shift. And the tech couldn't replicate the problem? Are you sure this wasn't in how you were shifting or letting off the clutch too early or something? And are you saying it wouldn't occur at high rpm but only around 4k? Seems strange. And you bought another vehicle from them when they wouldn't fix your old problem?

Either way, hopefully you have something you'll be happy with.

I liked that car so much that I wish the problem was me shifting wrong. However, I've had manual transmission cars for the majority of my life.

Usually when it's driver error, it may happen in multiple gears at different times. This only manifested itself going from 2nd to 3rd at about 4.3k rpm at about 2/3 throttle. Any other gear combination, 4-3, 3-2 or anything else and everything shifted great without any issues.

This would happen getting on the freeway at around 50mph, but sometimes when just trying to have fun. Even though I explained the conditions, the service techs could not duplicate it. I was not happy and left them a single star review.

The owner of the dealership reached out and directed upper management to help.
Basically they took it back, and credited me the depreciation. I then applied that and a few more bucks to upgrade myself to a 2024 10 speed performance pack.

I do like the new car very much.

That said, I would advise folks to stay away from any new/used MT-82 equipped vehicle unless it's proven to be OK. I'm sure most of them are fine but in my opinion there is an unacceptable level of failure that should be addressed. Anyways check out my car:rockon:

Man wait til you hear about the issues people have with the 10 speeds. 😂

I occasionally get a lock out + also sometimes a grinding going into 3rd.

So weird. Sucks they didn't do anything to help you with the previous car but sounds like they at least set you straight to get you into something else. Glad you like the new car!

Yeah the dealer was really great, Ford, not so much. I'm happy now though.
Thanks

So true! Never a single issue with my 21 6spd. I love my 22 10 speed, but damn is it odd AF sometimes. Clunky, whinny, harsh, etc. you name it, but damn is it fast!

The difference in acceleration going to the auto is actually quite noticeable. It feels much quicker. I really like it.
