Can anyone tell me why a car with barely 20k on it is grinding every time I hit third. Im clutching all the way. If I depress the clutch and basically leave it in until the rpms drop, it will shift right in. Driving around town it’s fine but if I decide to get on it my 2-3 shift will grind into place. Could it be a clutch issue if it only happens to third? Swapped fluid for RP synchromax, and ordered a Barton hybrid shifter. Not sure if it can be remedied or if I will have to take it in for a bad synchro. Thanks

I had the same problem with 2-3 shifts in my Firebird with a Tremec 5 speed. I also had an even worse grind from a 4-3 downshift. It was the synchro.

I feel for ya. My 15’ GT MT82 was a pos transmission. Even after i swapped out the fluid to synthetic fluid, swapped the shifter to a MGW shifter, swapped the clutch line to a stainless steel clutch line and put a Steeda clutch spring for the stock spring it never did shift right. Very notchy with occasional grinds. It was an overall frustrating transmission.

I almost swapped the transmission for a Maxgnum XL but got frustrated with it and traded the car for something different.

What exactly are my other options for a transmission? It’s under warranty but I don’t want to put a new one in just to end up with the same conditions. I can’t even find a website selling transmissions for this car.

Most people who get a different transmission other than the Getrag MT82 is the Tremec Magnum XL. Check out the transmission section.

You shouldn't be grinding at 20k. Ford warranty covers the drivetrain for 60k miles. I'd take it in. I have the 2019 MT82 and I'm pretty sure they upgraded some internals / syncros and such. Mine feels very nice, but I only have 5,500 miles on it. I have smooth shifts in every gear under heavy torque high RPM driving as well as daily leisurely driving. Hopefully it will last, but if it gives me any trouble then Ford will need to deal with it.

it's under warranty take it into your dealer and get it fixed. My educated guess would be a bent shift fork and worn syncro not engaging properly.

Did you ever figure it out? Crazy to think bad synchros with low miles

You have a 2016 GT and if you beat the snot out of her (Power shifting) you may have bent a shift fork. Ask me how I know? former 2018 GT.
