So I read somewhere the DI engines have special pistons to splash the fuel back up to keep from washing down cylinder walls.

Since I'm going for 1000rwhp on E85 and long distance capable (powertour) I'm wanting to do this right with the short block.

Anyone have some insight on the pistons?

Looks like they added a dimple to clearance the spark plug, the piston quench area looks similar to previous generations. Other than that they are the same hypereutectic aluminum piston that they've been using for years.

iirc that dimple is not for the spark plug. Its dimpled because direct injection.

You want to do it right? Pull the engine. Take it to a reputable machine shop. Do the oil pump gears, the chain sprocket. Have them true up the block and do cylinder liners. Install forged rods and pistons.

Yes,

I already have the oil pump gears and sprocket. It's going to get sleeves - but all the builders I've talked to do not mention anything about the DI specific pistons like I would think they would have....

Hence I'm doing research.

The machinist I use didn't mention that either. But I didn't ask. I know he has been doing 2018 engines. He said he has been machining out those cylinders to fit liners. I'll ask him one of these days about that. ATI Super Damper is a nice addition to an engine build.

You need 18 specific pistons for the DI. They are out already.

Diamond Pistons has the MOD2K pistons for the Gen3 coyote motors. They have the dimple and everything and pistons are rated for 2k hp. Saw their video from PRI on youtube.

The "dimple" is to center the fuel inside the chamber and be closer to the spark plug for more efficient operation. Helps cut down on knock, uses less fuel due to a leaner mixture being acceptable and lower spark timing needed to achieve MBT.
