The HPFP can be pretty noisy on direct injection motors. Piston slap before operating temp can also be normal. The LS crowd deals with it. Piston alloys expand and contract at different rates than the block and sleeves. It’s less of an issue with Forged pistons.
Actually, forged pistons need to have looser clearances due to expansion and have more of a tendency to have piston slap until warmed up.

Thats a pretty good plan. It seems im far from unique in upgrading froman ST though.
Entry drug. lol. I never really liked my ST all that much really. I'd traded my 2011 Brembo 5.0 for it when my daughter was born. As soon as she turned 3 and could be safely sat facing forward I went out and got a 16GT, and now the 18. The ST was a really nice little car, but the FWD drove me crazy, plus I really missed the V8 sound.

I cant remember if I posted this already or not, but my engine was the Essex plant, 21-Nov.

I haven't even got my '18 GT yet, but the way I look at it, 5 years/60,000 miles is a long time to figure out if there really is a problem or not. I'm going to drive it like it was meant to be driven. If something happens, it should be fixed under warranty. If nothing happens, I'll hopefully enjoy it for a long time. If too many things happen to it, it will be traded before the warranty is up.

Holy shit. Is this what all ST's or other high pressure fuel pumps sound like? Sounds like our cars.

Does getting rid of the sound tube lower the noise of the rattle noise on the ST's?
Shit - my car doesn't sound like that.

So ran across this video:

Check it around the 15 minute mark. Apparently low load/low RPM the car uses the port injectors. Then it blends before going all DI. I'm betting we are all hearing that rattle during the blend period.

Awesome find man!! This would make sense, but he says at "low speeds", i would assume he meant low RPM as speed is irrelevant in fuel delivery right? If that's the case then that completely explains why we are hearing the rattle between roughly 1500-2800RPM and nothing there after. Though there are guys on here taking their vehicles in with "the rattle" and dealers are authorizing short or long block replacements and in some cases complete buy backs....thats whats really concerning. So do all 18 GT's rattle and these guys just got the short end of the stick, or is the rattle the definitive sign of engine damage? Thats the question that needs to be answered.

So I think the guys with the 15-17's that have a rattle probably have an issue. Some of the 18's do too obviously, but by and large I think what most of us are hearing is normal. I've tried, and tried, and tried to get my phone/gopro and amazon "action cam" to pick the noise up to post a video and I just can't.

I can hear it. My wife can hear it. But the mic won't pick it up. Given that the folks who are getting repairs done also successfully captured video of their noise were able to capture it on video so easily makes me wonder how much louder theirs is than what I hear. Or they just have better/newer recording equipment. I asked my dealership about mine, and they said it was normal. I haven't driven another 18 yet, but that's on my to-do list. So is mounting my camera under the hood to see if I can get a good bead on the noise.

I also got an oil sample I need to mail off from when they replaced my pan gasket, I'll report back on that once I send it in.

In my case I had a 2012 Mazdaspeed3 and I upgraded the internals on the HPFP myself and that thing rattled a lot. Took me a while to get used to that chatter. Very slight difference in pitch from the excessive piston slap engine rattle on my GT and engine rattle is louder. My rattle sounds more like spark knock. Really noticeable in 3rd gear holding steady at 2200 rpm. That's what grabbed the attention of the service tech who found the cylinder damage. Hope this helps.

I can also hear the rattle on my October 10th build date Essex plant engine. Sounds almost identical to others but I too cannot get it on video. After listening to the high pressure fuel pump video I think we might be onto something. It’s that or Ford has a big problem on their hands since so many of us seem to have this noise. Mine is so low that any other noise (low radio volume, light rain, etc) is enough to mask it.

I used my iPhone 8 to record the video. The rattle on mine is "oh fuck" loud.lol.

Try recording on 3rd gear around 2200 rpm and see if it is audible.

LOL, yeah mine definitely isn't. Mine sounds like the video BladeGT just posted, but if I turn my radio on, I can't hear it. So if I listen for it, I can hear it, but that's about it, it's easily masked.

You can hear the rattle in this video right around a minute 30. I've heard it in MANY 2018 Mustang review videos. I suspect what most of us are hearing is totally normal.
