This seems too common to be an actual problem.
I want to believe so bad that its not a problem, but bigriver took his car in and had damage to cyl. 5,6,7,8 if i recall correctly. This is why im paranoid. Unless his car is just an anomaly and had engine problems from the get go and the chatter is just "normal", so one would assume that the sound is the indicator of engine issues, but it may not be. Im trying so hard to convince myself theres nothing wrong...lol.

I'm still trying to get pics of the damage. All they told me was they found it in cylinders 5-8. There must be something if Ford approved shortblock. I've had other friends listen to the noise and they thought it wasn't a problem so I think mine is just a freak of nature and probably a casting anomaly. My car was assembled on a Thursday so maybe the line wanted to clock out early and make it a three day weekend lol.

I just know I'm not going to modify anything before it gets sorted!

My engine was built on a Tuesday (21-Nov) and it had a leaky pan gasket. My car also rattles, but when I last had a chance to really chase it, it was louder on the passenger side and I couldn't hear it in the block with my scope.

I've since listened to a bunch of videos on youtube of people testing/showing off 18's and I can hear what seems to be a similar sound in most of them. I'd bet it's normal. What I want to figure out though, is WHAT is doing it. Just because I'm curious.

This is encouraging. If it is normal, I think we can all agree it'd be nice to know exactly what it is so we can have an understanding and most importantly peace of mind!

I just got my 2018 back from the service department with a very similar rattle.
-Rattle only occurs between 1800 and 2000 RPM
- Only betweek 17.5" and 20" of vacuum (according to the digital gauge in the cluster)
-Not dependent on engine temp
-Not dependent on gear or side to side pressure on the shifter
-Louder on the passenger side
-"Probably" happening on or in sync with every ignition event

The dealer drove me in my car and in another 2018 GT and reproduced the sound. It's been diagnosed as noise from the high pressure fuel pump, which is on the passenger side of the engine.
I'm satisfied with the answer, but I'm happy to have it on record that I complained.
I've been around a lot of engines and have a very good mechanical ear, and I just couldn't place this noise, so it's likely (in my mind at least) that it;s from the direct injection system, as I've never had much experience with those systems.

This would make sense, my 2017 ST made a very similar noise and I was concerned about that as well and people on the forums said it was the high pressure fuel pump and injectors. It's just more prominent with the Mustang, but I guess that would make sense since it's a bigger engine pumping out more fuel. I want to Hope that this is the only issue, but I keep referring back to bigrivers engine issue. He actually had engine damage.

Actually now that you mention it, my 2014 st made a similar sound. Not load dependent though. Durect injection does bring its own sounds to the party apparently

That was my first thought, but when I asked my dealer they said mine was something in the clutch/trans, and that others on the lot did it too...so it was deemed normal. I still think it is probably DI related myself though. My ST sounded like this too, which is why the noise hasn't bugged me. I ditched my ST at over 40k miles and it never even thought about giving me a problem.

I bought a cheap go-pro knock off so I could mount it stupid places and not care about it's fate, I just haven't had time to play with this more yet.

Thats a pretty good plan. It seems im far from unique in upgrading froman ST though.

Guys having this issue: what are your engine build dates and plant? 11/28/17 Essex plant here. You can find the label on your drivers side valve cover closer to the firewall.

The HPFP can be pretty noisy on direct injection motors. Piston slap before operating temp can also be normal. The LS crowd deals with it. Piston alloys expand and contract at different rates than the block and sleeves. It’s less of an issue with Forged pistons.
