2017 vs 2018 - Engine Sound

The 2018 sounds much better. They are much more distinct and snarly.

And if you get active exhaust in the 2018's, there is no comparison.

Put the exhaust on a MY15-17 and they will sound damn near identical. The firing order is the same and I'm sure the cam profiles aren't significantly different. All of that "snarl" is from the exhaust system, not the engine.

That doesn't change the fact, that the 18's sound better. Even at idle, they sound better.

The new Coyote has a higher compression ratio than previous versions. A higher compression ratio tends to give the engine more "bark".

I'm sure the exhaust system makes a difference as well. But my opinion is that if you are comparing a 2017 and 2018 Mustang, part of the car is the exhaust system. I think the active exhaust is a huge step forward and makes the 2018 much more desirable. Previously the owner had to compromise between quiet stock exhaust or overly loud aftermarket versions.

There is no doubt Ford did a bang-up job on the MY18 exhaust. It’s what the 15-17 should have come with stock.

High compression no doubt can have an effect on exhaust tone, but I don’t think that’s where the extra bark is coming from. I think you’ll see a lot of MY15-17 folks people buying MY18 take off exhaust. I’d bet once we get some sound clips of the swap they will sound damn close. I expect to start seeing some swaps within a few months.

I personally adore my Corsa Sport in every way…except the volume of cold starts. The active exhausts are cool, no doubt…but it’s just one more thing to go wrong or make noise (IMHO). Once people get comfortable with their settings, they tend to leave them where they’re at.

With that said, had I been given the option, I likely would have chosen it to avoid having to buy aftermarket. But knowing me, I would have set it on sport mode and left it.

Probably close - and it's a little tough to compare apples to apples if the active exhaust opens under WOT. WOT is where you will really hear the snap from the extra compression.

Well, you have a sound tube on the car stock!! That's pumping some "fake" noise in to the car. So if you're like me and would rather your cabin quiet when your windows are up, go ahead and remove that extra 2 lbs of plastic waste off your car & cap the holes.

Just comparing engines and not exhaust the 18 does have a bit more tick, clatter, or rattle to it at certain rpms specifically when cold. Warmed up I don't notice anything inside my cabin with about 5600 miles on it now. Cold I drive gently because it will make some clattering under load until warmed up.

You're probably getting some DI noises inside from the new injection system...and I'd imagine that you'd hear them even more if you take the new engine covers off (this is definitely the case in the ecoboost-part of the plastic engine cover is for sound dampening).

Don't really know what this is, when I looked at a 17 Fusion Sport, that car had fake engine noises pumped into the cabin through the speakers! totally stupid, imo, where is this "sound tube" entry into the cabin of a mustang? all I here in mine is the sweet exhaust note from the back of the car....

In terms of engine noise, the '18s will have the direct injection "tick"......but this shouldn't be noticeable from the cabin, only with your head under the hood

There is also a whistle sound at low rpm low speed. I don t know if it s only with the automatic transmission.

That 1 increase in compression is not gonna make a huge difference in terms of sound.
Unless they changed the style of intake and location of the intake, I highly doubt you are gonna hear any change in sound. When you are in the car, you hear mostly the exhaust.
Also an auto will sound different than manual due to the fact the engine is under load when stopped. Automatic when stopped will have a lower and louder engine tone.

Aside from volume I can't really tell much of a difference from the 18 to the 17 in terms of actual sound characteristics.
