Just rebuilt a Coyote motor for a good friend of mine that popped cylinder 8 with 7000 miles on the car. Motor has had a HO kit on it for 5000 miles. Car was running great and making loads of power. He did a pull and when he let off it threw a CEL. Code was p0308 misfire cylinder 8. Here's the carnage. Everyone involved agreed the ring gap in cylinder 8 was way to tight and led to the failure. There were no signs of lean conditions or knock. Rings were at .016 the rest of the cylinders were at .019 -.020. You can see what the piece of piston did to the valves and top of the piston.

Got the motor apart and sent to the machine shop for balance, hone with tq plates and washing

Got the block and rotating assembly back and the fun began. Machine shop balanced rotating assembly to .5 gram. All bearings and crank trust were in spec. We are local to MMR and they were a great help to us. We used MMR(Manley) forged 10:1 pistons and rods. Billet oil gear and timing gear. Clevite rod and main bearings. All seals were changed as well. MMR secondary tensioner, head cooling mod and oil squirter block offs. Total seal rings gapped at .024 top .024 second and .018 oil retaining. Upgraded timing chains and ARP head studs and cam cap bolts. The valves in cylinder 8 were also replaced.

All in all it went together very nicely. We are installing 80lb injectors and a 13 pound pulley in two weeks. Motor had no issues and fired on the first try after priming of course.

Very nice build .
Did you consider sleeving or sleeve supports ?

I am curious , why you needed the oil squirter block off plates in a 15-16 block ?

I had thought they were deleted after 2013.

I too was surprised when I found pieces of the broken oil squirters in the oil pan after a buddy had helped rebuild my 15 block .

I had started to wonder if my block had been swapped somewhere along the way .lol

Also could this be related to the inherent heat problems in cylinder 8 ?

Cylinder 8 in my failed alluminator looked just like yours .

May be the MMR head cooking mod is worth it after all.

No they for sure have oil squirters. This block has a casting date of 12/02/15. I think thats a myth and only a few blocks didn't have them. We deleted because they did not clear the new piston skirts. We did consider sleeves but MMR said they should be good to roughly a 1000 hp since we didn't bore. We dont plan on anything close to that. Yes I think t was heat and the ring gap on cylinder 8 that caused the failure. The water jacket on the head doesn't cover cylinder 8. I do think the cooling mod is a good idea after looking at the cooling jackets.

Thanks man and great job/write up again.

Good to know about the oil squirters before I accused some one of swapping my block .:frusty:

I replaced the alluminator with the MMR 1500 and did the head cooling mod this time around.

What kind of boost and power level were you at to grenade a aluminator?

Very nice. I love building motors. Everything is shiny and clean when you get to assemble it. Hopefully I won't be doing that anytime soon with mine though.. lol

This -lol
Some people think it was tune related.
I am not so sure and sticking with the same tuner with the MMR 1500(also have GT 350 heads)
Am I wrong ?

Well that explains that lol. Very nice #'s. I didn't want to assume anything but that piston in the pic does look like it knocked itself to death. Stormtroopergt's car is custom tuned also and we will be using the same tuner. His failure I dont believe was tune related but it could have been. Ringlands crack for a number of reasons.
