Head lights caused this much cramping? Yikes. Brought back memories of working on my brothers twin turbo 300ZX...that was a fun car, but a pain to do any work on.

It seems this engine is moving forward only in half steps and in increments of several years between each. First in 2011 we get a great new engine... but excuses as to why no direct injection even though it was designed for it. For 2015 we get slightly bigger valves and a return to charge motion control valves, but still no direct injection.

Direct injection is the only way this engine is ever going to make 420 torque and 460 HP while meeting the required emissions, drivability, mileage, and installability (meaning no long tube headers) requirements. And doing it while being a base V-8. Direct Injection is one of those technologies that has it all: emissions, drivability, power, torque.

With the charge motion added for 2015, the bigger valves, and the intake cam timing phaser revision, there should be more low-end torque here. The purpose seems to be torque. I would believe that these same changes are also being made to the upcoming new F-150 Coyote (they should, since the F-150 pays the big bills for this engine) where more torque is always needed. I suspect we'll hear the numbers for both vehicles once the F-150 is announced because this is highly competitive information.

But don't look for LT1-beating torque - it's not possible with this engine in this displacement and when naturally aspirated. When the Camaro gets the LT1 engine in it's all-new 2016 model as it's base V-8, and with much lighter weight due to the state-of-the-art Alpha chassis, the competition between base V-8s will be one-sided. The Mustang is going to then have to rely on special editions to get ahead (which will also be tough given the new supercharged LT1 about to be announced) or by taking a different direction entirely. Aka EcoBoost 3.5 - which has the potential to make 460 torque with a peak across a far wider range than the naturally aspirated Coyote.

Amen to that bro . I really hope ford does not piss off all the mustang owners with changes as dramatic as the 2010-2011 with the power plant . I really hope that this 5.0 v8 will be producing impressive numbers . It would be a real disappointment if ford only adds 10-15 hp for 2015 and with the 2016 model offering direct injection and getting 50-60 hp increase thats just frustrating . I don't care about the special variants they offer . I need the affordable gt with bad ass numbers . It seems ford always does this kind of shit . Even with the f-150 in 2009-2010 they had the 4.6,5.4 and in 2011 the 5.0 ,6.2 even though this is very good for the consumers but come on it really gets people who bought the older models pissed off especially if there is not a significant increase in price.

Ford's answer to the LT1 should be direct injection, as well as an ecoboost 5.0 option.
That would be great.

I'm already interested in what the Mach 1 will have, as of right now, that is the only car i would trade in my 13 GT Premium for.

I think that Ford is saving DI for the drivetrain update around 2017/18, when the Mach 1 is rumored to be released. I would expect around 430/400 for 2015/16, and probably 480-500/450-470 when the drivetrain update occurs.

Because of the added tech in the new mustangs, I wouldn't be surprised if the base price of all the models jumps about 3K.

So what would you have them do? Notify you when they're working on a new motor? You could complain about anything you buy. Samsung always releases a new model every year and TVs are getting bigger for cheaper. It's the nature of the game, you gotta pay to play.

The Coyote's injectors are already placed so the fuel goes directly into the combustion chamber when the valve is open, which further reduces the gains that DI would add.

We could see upwards of that, maybe 25 to 30 more, a lot of the 4C motors that went DI seam to gain about 10-15. I agree that DI is just a more complicated system, and personally not interested until they can make something that doesn't cause problems with carbon build up on the back of the valves. Mini, BMW and Audi have all had issues with this. It seams that since this is a know issue the engineers will work it out, but it's not a big selling feature for me. The 5.0 is a pretty solid motor in it's current state.

One of my biggest concerns is the addition of the Charge Motion Control Valves, I don't know much about these. How do they effect the ability to add aftermarket intakes, superchargers, tuning, etc.
I've seen a few discussions about deleting on older cars that use to have them.

I have a feeling the aftermarket will respond pretty quick IMO. I know on my GT I'll just start off with the basics: CAI, tune, and full exhaust system. Then I'll wait and see what people are putting down with the Boss and CJ intakes.

That is the sound tube -that can be removed
This bay is way too tight, I can see the fire or melting plastic recalls now.
2.3 for me, or keep my '13

It looks no different than any other car on the road. I work on Mercedes which have some very tight engine bays, there aren't any issues with fires or melted plastic because of that. The kind of thermo-plastics used in engine compartments can handle serious heat.

Car in question is a calibration car, that is what the box above the steering wheel is used for: engine calibration work.

Annoyed that someone would take pictures of their own test car under non-disclosure agreements and flaunt them as something it is not. What I mean is this is not the Shelby, SVT, or high-performance variant some hoped it was.

This is simply one of the early camo cars with all the vinyl camo and padding taken off.

The halogen headlights are there just so the early prototypes had headlights, and could be driven on the street, as production headlights weren't ready.
