I feel like we're all kind of not seeing the forest for the trees.
But again, I don't think we're looking at it right. We've established that the v6 this year is scaled back to make the ecoboost more appealing. So to me, unless you just want the new body style or IRS, the ecoboost needs to be compared to the current v6 to consider it's "value":
These are the items that you're paying for. +$2539.55 for IRS, new body, a few new standard features like push to start, 5 hp, and 40lb-ft. Or +$534.29 for "10" hp, and 40lb-ft (if you made up your mind to buy the new body style any way)
Don't feed the Ford Troll and believe your getting anything more. You're paying for everything you're getting. If you're ok with these numbers and such
more power to you my friend enjoy your new ride.
Me personally, I'm very disappointed with both the ecoboost and the V6 and, overall, the launch of this model. If I hadn't made up my mind I was going to get an LE, I probably wouldn't buy this year's car. I'd likely settle for the '13/'14. Every number so far for me has been pretty lack luster, not complete garbage but VERY lack luster with the v6 and i4 being as close to "garbage" for me skimming by just a hair. But nothing has made me go "Shut up and take my money!" lol
Quick side note: I'm not critisizing ANYONE'S decision. Just my thoughts on this launch.
TL;DR
Don't think your getting a great value for one car over another here. You're paying for everything you get one way or another, and personally, i don't think it's worth it. The '14 v6 is more likely to sell to me than the lower '15 v6 or i4.
You only considered one fuel price. If you're truly going to make that comparison you should do it at the fuel recommendation of the manufacturer because that's likely to the be the EPA test equivalent. Best Rates in my area are 3.02 for reg, 3.38 premium. Using that, comparing transmission to transmission, and the entry level cost for the base v6 and the base i4, the ecoboost will be $534.29 more expensive in that 5 year time, 15k miles a year. And that's using the 26mpg vs 21 mpg. The gap would be even greater if It were 28 vs 31. So expect your 534.29 to be just to get the higher low-end torque. Don't yourself as it's the same but better... you're paying for it.Ran a quick calc based on $3.50/gal, 5 years, and 15K miles per year. Only counting acquisition costs and fuel cost; after 5 years the EB is over $800 cheaper. The V6 is only for someone (some organization, i.e. Hetz) not paying for the gas and not owning the car very long.

The '14 v6 can still be had new for $3085 less than the ecoboost. After 5 years the net cost will be $2539.55. Again this is using the combined mileage not the hwy. Highway here will, like the other have a bigger gap in the cost. 305hp vs 310hp. 280lb-ft vs 320lb-ft. Then you have to consider reliability of that new engine (i don't know much about engines but it seems like most people here can be paraphrased as "forced induction burns up your engine faster than natural aspiration".
