Just bought a 2020 10 speed 5.0 on Saturday. Didn’t really notice this until today. The shifter seems to have a lot of play when it’s in reverse, neutral, and drive. The shifter will go into park from reverse without pushing the button but it stays in reverse gear. It wiggles an alarming amount. I don’t have an issue with staying in reverse, neutral, or drive but it’s quite annoying

refer to this video for a better understanding.

I took it to ford to get it looked at but had to make an appointment. Just trying to get any answers in the mean time.

The way the shifter is functioning is how it was intended. Certain "shifts" can happen without pressing the button, certain ones cannot.

As far as the wiggle, that's normal to some degree. Some of the mounting nuts/screws could be a bit loose, but the shifter will wiggle somewhat and there's not much you can do about that besides learn to live with it. But with an auto shifter, this should be much less of an issue than a manual one that you're constantly using.

I know it can go from drive to sport and vise versa without pressing the button. The main issue is that it will go into park from reverse without pressing the button down but the gear remains in reverse. My old gen 2 6r80 did not wiggle or act like this car.

Hmmm I’ll have to check out mine tomorrow, but I have not noticed anything I would be concerned about.

Actually, what you are showing in the video looks like if a cable is not tight on the trans end. Do these have an adjustable connection on the trans side of the cable?

I’m not too sure. I’m new to the 10r80 and my gen 2 with the 6r80 didn’t have these issues so I never had to check it out. I’m not too educated on how the new assembly works and whatnot. As far as I know and what I have heard, it’s mostly electronic.

The 6R80 and the 10R80 shifter assemblies are the same as far as how they mount to the top of the trans tunnel.

Pop the trans selector cover off and check to see if there’s any loose fasteners, missing fasteners, etc.

The link I attached is a video of the shift assembly in action displaying the problem. The thing is, I don’t know what I am looking at. This is something I don’t know much about. Never had to mess with this kind of thing.

Is that shifter actually attached to the transmission with a cable? I've assumed it's nothing more than an electric switch disguised as an old school shifter to shut us old farts up.

I’m not sure. I haven’t actually checked.

I’ve been told it’s electronic and not a physical cable. That information could be wrong though.

There is a physical cable connecting the shifter in the car, to the shift lever on the side of the transmission. From there, the lever is connected to an electronic switch that controls solenoids on the valvebody

Ok, that makes more sense. Thanks for the explanation. Hopefully this issue I’m having is a fairly simple fix
