They do something similar to this in Nebraska every fall, if you don't want to travel as far. I've never been to it but want to. There is a 55-mile road course, a 12-mile road course, a 1-mile and a half mile top speed shootout. Top speed record in the standing mile is 224mph.

I'd do the beginner class in order to get familiar with and to be qualified to run it the next year in a bigger class. I think it'd be fun. My car isn't super modified suspension-wise, and going 124mph for extended periods would be fun, in my opinion. I'd still like to do it.

My brother sent me a link to this and it looks tempting. Anyone with input on the event?

It is a lot of fun. I was actually at the race in 1989 when RJ set the record. His dad was really nice.
I've been wanting to do it again.

You dont need a particularly advanced suspension setup. Its not a lot of switchbacks. I found out on the same stretch my colorado is governed at 98 on the 318 if that says anything. And its a 4x4

I did the 110 class a couple of years back and it’s honestly a blast, but way more technical than just floor-it-and-go. The "Narrows" section is where it gets real, you’re basically threading a needle through canyon walls at speeds that feel much faster because of how tight the road gets. My biggest tip is to be obsessive about your tires and tech inspection; they do not play around and will DQ you for the smallest oil leak or an expired helmet. It’s a long weekend in the desert, so bring plenty of water and a co-driver you actually like, because that 90 mile stretch feels like forever when you're trying to nail your average time down to the second. Definitely worth the trip to Ely if you want to legally see what your car can do outside of a drag strip.

I like the idea of open road racing, but I'd go run laps around VIR first.

I can see where open road racing might look a lot more interesting if you've already run several tracks and you're looking to try another type of event.

Could you imagine all the hoops they must jump to get this event off the ground?
So if you are willing to put in the time, then great. If not, don't put the org down for having rules that they had to put in place to get event like this approved.
^ THIS. If they're anything like the SCCA they've probably got a million-dollar insurance policy.
I know the sports car clubs I've run with can afford their million-dollar policies because
A) They've never made a million-dollar claim
B) The insurance company looks at their rules and has a vote.

Open road racing has the extra hoops of getting police and other authorities to agree to it. Some car guys had to impress some non-car-guys (including lawyers) that they were super organized and could do this safely.

I remember this back in the late 80's, early 90's when I lived in Northern Nevada. Used to be on the highway between Austin and Battle Mountain. Always thought it looks like fun, even if you are speed limited, more to it than just flat out speed. I think it would be pretty fun. Every few years I see something about it and I always think I really should do it one day just for the experience. Maybe one of these years I will get around to it.
