Hi, I'd like to hear the opinions of people who own a 2021 or newer Mustang EcoBoost. I have a friend who wants to get an EcoBoost Mustang, but he has no idea how good they are, if they're prone to problems, etc. I have a Mustang GT that I recently bought, but I'm not a good reference, and my Coyote 5.0 is great, and you rarely see anyone speak badly of it.

I know EcoBoosts have a bad reputation in the eyes of the community, but I'd like to know if you could give me your experiences, suggestions, recommendations, etc., to help my friend decide if it's a good buy or not. I mentioned that he could get a GT, but the fuel economy doesn't convince him that much, haha.

Cons: wheezy 4 cylinder turbo
Cons: only 300hp
Cons: sounds like a garden tiller

Pros: gets 35mpg
Pros: can be just as fast with a GT after you give it a tune
Pros: just as fast on the street - who goes over 60mph anyway
Pros: just as fast on the street - the GT in the other lane won't get traction
Pros: soooo light you can turn on a dime
Pros: everyone will think it's a GT they won't even know it's an EB
Pros: insurance is like half the cost
Pros: omg turning is fun

What are some known problems he should be aware of, and how reliable is the EcoBoost?

OP you buy an EB because you want the style and the fun but don't care about the speed. an EB convertible is a great summer cruiser.

These are copes, sorry to be rude but this reads like you've never even driven an S550 GT.

For what it's worth I had an Ecoboost Premium MY 2017. It was an excellent car. I had it for 6 years. Really happy with it except creepingly I wanted that V8 exhaust note. No problems except a couple of minor replacements. I have a Mach 1 now and it's not comparable. There is nothing like a V8 motor. Fuel milage is suprisingly pretty good if you don't beat on it.

My first Ford was a 2015 Ecoboost, it was an MT-82 and it shifted perfectly, I never used the clutch unless it was first or reverse.
The car was relatively quick and drove like an S550 despite the skinny 18" tires.

It was purchased half on a whim and mostly for the mileage because I was driving over 100 miles a day 5 days a week. It averaged 31 mpg over the 70K I put on it.

The car was driven like a rental car from day 1 and the only issue it ever had was the AC leaking freon. That lead to the dash having to be pulled to fix it and I ended up trading it before I ever got it back.

There is no comparison worth getting into with a GT, Mach 1 or their big brothers, but if your friend doesn't care about power or cares more about mileage tell him to buy it.

I would rather see someone in an S550 than a Honda.

I own a '18 Ecoboost Premium convertible with the 10 speed auto transmission. I bought it used with 30k miles and the CPO warranty in July 2019. I wanted the convertible and didn't care to spend the extra for the V8. At the time I paid slightly more than half of its new sticker price.
Overall it's been a good car. With one pretty big caveat. At around 83k miles it developed the infamous 2.0L Ecoboost headgasket failure. I had coolant leaking into the #3 cylinder. Ford replaced the headgasket under the CPO warranty without a single issue or question. It's currently at 117k ish miles and doing just fine.
I do not know if Ford has resolved the headgasket issue in later Model years.
I've driven it on several long trips since the repair with no issues and will be doing another 500 mile round trip in it next week. It's very comfortable on the road.
The Ecoboost definitely doesn't get very much respect in the Mustang community but outside of there nobody much cares. I don't go a week without someone making a favorable, sometimes envious, comment about it.

Thanks for your comment. Could you come back here after your 500-mile trip and give an update? I also wish you a safe trip.

2.3l

and the 2021 would have the newer revised block and should not have that issue

Certainly, but I don't expect there to be much to update other than losing some money at the casino... The car is my daily driver and we have taken it on many trips of 300 to 1500 mile round trip distances.
Even when the headgasket was falling the car would start and drive well. I just had a constant misfire code because coolant doesn't burn very well 😐.

Yes, of course, the 2.3. I misspoke.
