So looking to add long tubes to my car. Wanted to keep my h pipe I currently already have if possible. Current setup is steeda h pipe and borla s type axel back. Want to keep them catted and also trying to control the cold start bark the s type creates and thinking about adding resonators behind the h pipe. Anyone have this setup or will I even be able to keep the h pipe. Any suggestions on brands or setups would be helpful. Trying to be respectful of the neighbors in the morning. Don’t mind the sound at WOT or cruising just trying to control that first second or two in the early mornings.

It will still be loud on cold starts. I had catted LTHs with a Steeda X-pipe and factory active exhaust and it still barked.

I had this same setup for about 2 weeks before I took the x pipe back out hahaha

Get rid of the H pipe for a muffler-style resonator

3 houses down there is a guy with an F150, 5.0, cats, flowmaster catback...I can hear him start it every morning at 6:30am. It's not THAT loud but the cold start is particularly annoying for that first 30 seconds or whatever.

I don't even want to know what my car sounds like at his house.

AI says:

Yes, custom tuners can significantly quiet down the cold start on a Coyote engine equipped with long-tube headers (LTH) by adjusting the engine’s calibration. Tuning out the obnoxious cold start is commonly done for vehicles with headers, as the factory strategy is designed to heat up catalytic converters quickly, which becomes excessively loud when using long-tube headers.

How a Tune Quiets Cold Starts
  • Adjusting Spark Timing: Tuners can alter the spark advance during startup. The factory setting uses significant negative timing (e.g., -5 to 10 degrees) to heat the cats, but changing this reduces the "gunshot" volume of the initial start.
  • Lowering Startup RPM: Tuners can lower the high idle RPM strategy often employed on cold starts, resulting in a lower, less aggressive idle.
  • Modifying Cam Timing: Adjusting cam timing in the tune can reduce the initial noise until the engine builds oil pressure.
    YouTube +3
Considerations
  • Emissions & Catalysts: The high-noise cold start is designed for fast catalyst light-off. Removing it may increase emissions during the warm-up phase, but this is rarely a concern for those with long-tube headers.
  • "Calm" Cold Start: Most tuners can create a "calm" cold start, making the initial startup noise level similar to a hot start.
  • Active Exhaust Alternative: If your Coyote has factory active exhaust, setting it to "Quiet Mode" can help, though it may not stop the initial 2-3 second roar as the engine fires.

Mine with catless lth Kooks, H pipe and active exhaust it really isn't bad! I did have Wengerd stop the annoying high idle cold start. Between that and the active in quiet mode it really starts a LOT quieter, but like NGOT8R said, the first second or two are still a good bark.

Lethal Performance has a resonated H pipe. I think they have it on their DH video. You might be able to hear a sound clip.

I'm going Stainless Power headers with gesi 450 cats running into SW H pipe with stainless works catback. My car was def louder at startup with the Steeda H-pipe and Oem active exhaust than it is with the SW catback. Def screams when you let her eat. I have mine set for quiet start which def helps. But anytime you cold start it you will get that initial loud growl. Kind of inherent to the car. I'm with you and trying to be respectful for my neighbors. I dont think it will be a ton louder D/T the cats. But will see after. Only way you are going to really quiet it down is to install some resonators. The borla is definitely louder than my setup. Find a good muffler/exhaust shop by you and see what they can do.

You can adjust the tune all you want this shit will be loud. I got rid of emissions reduction on my car (negative spark timing on cold start) changed cam angles. Even tried it with only port injection starts only. Still loud as hell. Active exhaust is your best bet if you must have headers....

I run Stainless Works LTH with GESI cats, Stainless Works H pipe back to my stock Active exhaust on the Bullitt. Car is tuned and I have the Quiet mode set up for the full day, and it is not bad at all on start up. Quiet mode really knocks it down a lot. My F150 has stock manifolds and a SPD Y pipe with Cats, back to a MBRP side exit and it is a bit deeper in sound, some of that due to the difference in firing order I bet. They both are not too aggressive IMO and my neighbors have never complained. I make sure I roll out easily as I go out at 630 in the morning and don't go to sport mode normally until I am well out of the hood and on the road to work.

Now my Ducati makes a little more rumble when I fire it up-Those desmo's make some noise.

Longtubes on an NA are DEFINITELY not worth the squeeze and as was mentioned you will almost certainly find the car louder than it was on the stock headers.

Catted Longtubes with the H pipe and the S type isnt awful on sound. If it was the Atak they can be loud. You can also add the Borla resonator to quiet it down as well. Let me know if I can help get you taken care of on some headers
