I have been trying to go through the blue smoke thread but there something that i dont find clear.

1. Is it easier to find the pcv fron the top or the bottom?
2. Since the pcv is basically a check valve that sucks at its job wouldnt adding one inline?

Any help would be appreciated sorry for this long beaten horse of a topic

I also have a catch can question- anyone using a generic CC? If so, where did you plumb it in? I'm tempted to get a generic can since many, many people have used them on a wide range of cars and they work- probably not as good as the high end models but I'm a diminishing returns kind of guy for anything except aviation where it's always best to have the best. But on this car, which I will probably only keep til the 80K mark, I think even a can that gets 80% will be fine. If I'm totally missing something or someone has suggestions, I'd love to hear it.

Even with the catch can you'll still need to get the valves cleaned at some point.

Yeah, I guess BMW lists it as part of the 40K service and use walnut shells. Not sure the exact procedure but I'll look into it. I'll also ask my friend who is a tech at Ford what he is seeing. They sell a ton of EB F150's.

I've also been told that pure synthetic oil vs. the semi that Ford uses helps reduce the carbon build-up.

I have the mishimoto catchcan and a UPR check valve 250$ for a part the dosent make power was not really favorable in my eyes. I just need to know if it is possible and what would happen if i didn't gut the pcv but still had an inline. Im just trying to stop the smoke.

You wouldn't be doing any benefit by adding a check valve inline if the PCV valve is still there.

The factory PCV valve is a check valve, but the way the factory breather is designed it does a poor job. The idea is to allow better flow OUT of the box for the catch can to pick up the oil vapor that would original go back through your engine into the cylinders and dilute your fuel octane by a good amount.

If you already have a check valve and catch can, don't be lazy just do it as it is a very simple modification for a great benefit.

If you would of bought the UPR catch can it comes with everything you need to gut the factory PCV valve.

Top if you remove the intake, bottom if you are Gumby.

I HIGHLY recommend taking the entire box off to get the PCV out.

Take the intake manifold off, I do it in about 10 minutes.

Remove charge pipe from throttle body.

Unplug purge valve

Unplug throttle body

Unplug tmap sensor

Disconnect purge line (green clip)

Disconnect vacuum line (white clip)

Remove 13mm nut from lower right side of intake manifold if you are standing at the driver's side fender.

Remove 10mm bolts from intake manifold to cylinder head, pull manifold out slightly. (5-7 inches from engine)

Disconnect PCV line at intake manifold

Pull the connectors that are snapped into the intake manifold

Remove intake manifold

Sounds like a lot of steps, but each step takes about 10-15 seconds. With the intake manifold out of the way you have access to the PCV box which you can just remove right off the car or pull out the PCV to gut it.

I like to work smarter not harder, going a few extra steps is better than potentially breaking the ring that holds the PCV into the breather box, or breaking any of the clips that hold the hoses to the units.

Don't mean to slightly hijack, but it's relevant, and I'm stuck here in my office for a few more hours.

Adam, I'm running the Passenger side valve cover line (that goes to the intake and has the sensor in it) to my pre-existing catch can. I'm going to add a NPT/AN T to the can and replace the quick connects with AN's for the line from the valve cover and the PCV.

I'm also adding a bulkhead style AN fitting to the oil sep box and ditching the little rubber disc/flapper. This should allow much better flow out of the crankcase and hopefully valve cover.

I know you were looking into the PCV system, just curious of what you think?

Push come to shove I have contemplated running an additional can (one of the regular UP cans) and tying them both together in series with the PCV entering the first and the valve cover entering the second.

I would run the valve cover to a catch can, then the other end of the catch can to an intake. Make sure the can has a baffle or some sort of system in place to prevent the oil from going straight across the can and into the intake line.

I will be running 2x -10AN fittings out of aluminum breather box to my catch can for the PCV side. So your setup will work as well. You can plug the PCV hole, and just drill right through the center of the box to access the divided upper and lower crankcase and install a bulkhead if you wanted.

Ok, that's right along my line of thought. I thought about a bigger -10 over the current -08 line. My only issue is my current can only has 1/2" NPT fittings, so it's the bottle neck.

I'm going to look for a bigger can for the PCV side and use the UPR can for the valve cover probably.

1/2NPT is only .10" smaller than -10an. You will be fine.

Just bought mine yesterday. It's being shipped now. Any chance of a write-up with better instructions on the PCV portion of this than there were in the "blue smoke thread"? It seemed like a list of bullet points and three photos was the best it's gotten so far. Still feel a bit concerned getting in there without a video or more detailed steps.

Edit: didn't see your post above. Any chance of photos?
