Any solutions to BBQ ticking???

[1st time Mustang]

Car has 7100 miles.Have gotten 3 oil changes so far..Drove
car during break in period by the book.Car has developed ANNOYING
ticking sound.Not as loud of some of the videos I saw..My Question is
would it hurt the engine to add 1 quart 5-30w oil if I was a quart short
of the 5-20w.Is mixing the two different grade oils bad.I saw on some
post that the 5-30w may help reduce the ticking sound.

My neighbors 2015 gt does the same thing. Happy my gt doesn't. But after listening to his it sounds like the ticking comes from beneath the car. Is this the ticking your hearing? Also I wouldn't mix oil weights but Lucas oil makes some great additives for all kinds of applications. I have used in the past with good results. May quiet your noise.

I used to mix engine oils in my old car if it was a quart low and the gas station didn't have much selection. I doubt it will hurt, but these newer DOHC VVT engines may be more fussy. And given the oil weights, I suppose you have to figure in cold performance, / hot performance, and whether either of those apply to you.

I read your question a little closer. I wouldn't try to remedy a ticking problem with a non-spec oil. Just take your car to the dealership and get it a going over.

You can mix different weights / brands of oils. They are all compatible. It wouldn't hurt anything to give it a try.

Those weights are so close to one another I wouldn't hesitate to add 1 qt of 30 wt with 7 qt of 20 wt.

Not going to hurt to mix oil weights, especially if it's the same brand of oil.

I'd really like to hear from someone who thought their car had the "BBQ Tick" and then tried an oil change with 5W-30 instead of 5W-20 to see if that helped quiet it down.

Mine still ticks...not getting any louder or worse even when I put the AC on. So for now, I'll live with it & hope nothing catastrophic happens.

Dealership was down to change my oil to 5w-30 but stupid @$$ Ford rep would not authorize it. Even told me that if I went ahead with having the dealership change to 5w-30, there will be a "warranty issue" if something goes wrong...FN-unbelievable. :tsk:

So f@ck Ford and their sh!t for nothing mess way of treating customers concerns. I could also go on about the crappy interaction I had with the rep but I'll digress. It won't do a thing nor change the piss-poor business philosophy they have over there. So we just paid off the car and be done with it.

I'd rather have fun modding my car and get rid of as much crap Ford parts as I can.

Yeah, that's a bunch of horse (pony) shit because the Boss 302 called for 5W-50 (yes, 50!!) for track use. Yet, that didn't void any warranty. Just put 5W-30 in it yourself, it's never gonna "blow-up" from using 5W-30. It's more likely to blow-up if pushed hard when using 5W-20.

Viscosity-wise the difference was so minuscule but maybe enough to make a difference with the ticking. I have 3 more free oil changes for the next year and a half. Doubt I'll use all of them. So for now, I'm still on 5w20.

It might make a difference. Using the specs for instance of Mobil 1 full synthetic, you can see the difference below. The ticking only seems to happen after the engine has warmed up and the oil has thinned down from temperature.

You can't be serious.

Ford engineers designed your engine to run on a specific oil viscosity. Yet you want to modify that and use the incorrect engine oil, and you expect the manufacturer to warranty it? What are you smoking?
