Except for subarus... hated changing the TB on those... I was so happy to hear that this had a chain!Chain. Back in the 60's when the transition from chains to belts on in line engines started it was done for noise control (belts are quieter). Also most engines were not interference designs so if a belt broke the engine just stopped, put a new belt on and you were back in business.
These days with the so much emphasis on economy AND power the compression is ever increasing and engines are now interference designs. A belt breaking on one of these engines is catastrophic and is the reason the transition back to chains has been made. You won't find many engines these days that don't have a chain.
The 2.0 Ecoboost in my Focus ST has a chain. Never heard of an overhead cam engine with gear driveI find myself puzzled as to why Ford went from gears in the 2.0 ecoboost to a chain on the balance shafts, though?
I'm talking about the balance shafts (down in the crank case), not the camshafts. I've never seen a 4-banger with balance shafts where the balance shafts weren't gear driven. The 2.0 Ecoboost in my Focus ST has a chain. Never heard of an overhead cam engine with gear drive
the balance shafts are gear driven
