Just a engineering query: What does the 4-cylinder engine use? belts or chain?

P.S. I hope the answer is chain.

Dunno the answer but why would you want it to be a chain ?

I know its supposed to not require any maintenance but I recall VW group having quiet a few issues with chains. Not sure how well Ford chains are holding up in the cars that use them, though.

Chain. Back in the 60's when the transition from chains to belts on in line engines started it was done for noise control (belts are quieter). Also most engines were not interference designs so if a belt broke the engine just stopped, put a new belt on and you were back in business.

These days with the so much emphasis on economy AND power the compression is ever increasing and engines are now interference designs. A belt breaking on one of these engines is catastrophic and is the reason the transition back to chains has been made. You won't find many engines these days that don't have a chain.

A simple search of the web on any search engine would have answered this question.

Except for subarus... hated changing the TB on those... I was so happy to hear that this had a chain!

I find myself puzzled as to why Ford went from gears in the 2.0 ecoboost to a chain on the balance shafts, though?

The 2.0 Ecoboost in my Focus ST has a chain. Never heard of an overhead cam engine with gear drive

I'm talking about the balance shafts (down in the crank case), not the camshafts. I've never seen a 4-banger with balance shafts where the balance shafts weren't gear driven.

the balance shafts are gear driven

similar to the MZR, there is a ring gear on the crankshaft that turns the balance shafts
deleting the balance shafts is as easy as dropping the pan, unbolting the balance shaft assembly, then installing the oil passage block off plate
