Why do you own a Mustang (or Mustangs)?

I've always had some kind of mustang. Lots of muscle cars. Then I drove my freinds 2020 gt350 HE with a Whipple. I built and ordered my mach weeks later. The mach was a little underwhelming when I stepped on it ( needs about 300 more hp)but the handling and braking was more than I ever experienced. I have a 84 gt turbo I'm doing a coyote swap for my drag racing needs.

My older brother's best friend in high school had a '69 Mach 1. It was red with the blackout hood, rear window louvers and Magnum 500 wheels. I don't recall what engine it had but it wasn't the hottest available. At any rate, I fell in love with that car and have been a Mustang fan ever since. The only time I really ever strayed was durring the "Smokely and The Bandit" craze when I lusted after a 1978 black and gold Trans Am.

Hiya, most roads are full of potholes so not the best! A lot of narrow country roads that are not used to seeing big wide mustangs either. LOL

Motorway (freeway equivalent) allows you to cruise a bit more but the speed limit is 70mph on motorways and TBH, if you travel more than 20 miles without seeing roadworks and having to slow down, you have done well!!!
Track days are an option but I have not done this yet.

Cops are like anyone else really. You can get a decent one, or you can get an @rsehole.

I am a mature driver and so tend not to attract too much attention even though there is only about 500-600 Mach 1s in the UK, so its more interest from them than anything else. Suppose if you behave and keep yourself to yourself, you are fine

You need to go on a road trip Phil. Just a short drive for you and your mustang heaven , get out there and stretch it legs.

Thanks for replying! I learned something new about the UK from a Mustang enthusiast perspective.

The freeways here (east of Hawaii, west of Nevada...) are congested and when they are moving it seems to only be so I can get a rock chip on my windshield. But out in the countryside there are quite a few decent roads for cruising. The cops here are constantly dealing with sideshow activity so thru my lens they seem to scrutinize me a bit more because of the car. Or it just feels like it.

In any case, enjoy our Mach 1!

My dad worked for Bill Boyer Ford (MPLS. MN) when I was 13 and every year when the new models came out, I got to go to the car shows for two days prior of the opening and we (all the kids whose parents worked for the car dealers) would get to lay on several coats of high luster polish and sit in all the cars and dream about one day having our own car. When the Mustang hit the floor, it was the one car that commanded all of the attention from everyone in attendance. I was a true fan of the car and still am.

Two reasons for me.

First, about 13,000 miles of US road trips in Mustangs - just three trips from 2017-2019 so big miles every time! Went to fantastic places, including a drive from San Diego to Seattle and back, plus tons of National Parks. Had a Mustang (convertible) each time and enjoyed almost every mile apart from LA and driving into Seattle in pouring rain at rush hour on a dark Friday night...
I think the adventures helped me bond with the cars and this has transferred over to my Mach 1 even if that makes absolutely no sense!

Second, I got increasingly bored with the lack of engagement from a series of ever-more competent and complicated Porsches which culminated in the new 2014 911 Turbo Cab I bought myself for a big birthday (sorry @SheepDog!).

I wanted something more unique, more characterful, positive and with much better low-speed engagement.

The Mach 1 sharpened up the looks of the facelift front end so well in my opinion, and I thought it would be the last of the naturally aspirated, manual V8s so that was one of the easier car buying decisions I've made!

Obviously I was wrong as the S650 made it over here - happy they exist but prefer the S550 on almost all counts....

My '15 is the 4th Mustang I've owned. Each one pretty much covered the variations of body styles ('65 fastback 289, 4 speed manual trans, '72 coupe 302, automatic, which I "experimented" with..., and an '83 GT 5 speed manual). I learned to drive a '66 Mustang when I was around the age 11 or 12 that my dad bought for my older brothers and a sister to drive to high school with. It had an inline 6 cylinder, with a 3 speed manual. It was the first car I learned how to tune cars on and do oil changes by watching my oldest brother and helping out (Many of us may remember setting the points gap). I suppose Mustangs are in my blood.

I have been restoring Mustangs since 1978, bought my first in 1983 (66 fastback, 289 AT), my first "New" car was a 1985 GT hatch, first convertible was a 1973 that I did a complete restoration on, it took 5 years, but well worth it! Had a bunch of foxbody variants to include notchbacks and convertibles, AT and 5speeds, built up an 05 convertible GT, supercharged (405rwhp,425p-ft) and had it run 12.35 at 112mph in Epping NH dragway. Played with Audis for a few years topping out with a 2017 RS7 Performance Prestige (800hp) and this year came full circle with my 2015 GT convertible purchase (had to have the 50th Anniversary package!). Love the history of the car line, love the various platforms that have been built and love being able to "redesign" what Ford had put together... Met Mr. Shelby 20 years ago at SEMA... During our conversation he stated..."Every Mustang is a blank slate waiting to be modified and made your own!"

When I was in my twenties. I opted to buy a house over a a 2003 Terminator convertible. It was the right choice. The house value went up and moved on to a bigger home. In 2006 I bought a Fox body 5.0 Cobra convertible (manual) before the price hike. Loved it! Drove it for a few years. Got married, had children and Mustang didn’t make sense. Sold it for more than I purchased. Fast forward to 2021, really wanted a S550 but decided on a 2003 Mustang GT convertible (manual) because I am a fan of New Edge. Low miles and cleaned it up, never drove in the rain, our 13,000 miles on it and decided one morning, life is too short and I want a S550 convertible. Found a MT82 3 hours from home, California special velocity blue with 6200 miles (2021 model). I put in 1500 miles since April. Love every minute of it and will keep this one.
So I have owned 3 mustangs. Why I love them? It can seat more than 2. It is not the fastest but love the way mustangs sound. My 2021 GTc with Corsa double H is very mean but nothing can beat a new edge 4.6 with Borla Atak and catless. I won’t own a corvette as it’s too cramped for me. I’m 6’2. Mustang works.

Mid 50s now. Had 3 previous mustangs earlier in life then a C6 and several Cadillacs later I decide its time to have a manual mustang again. I am thinking time is limited to enjoy these cars... Soon maybe we all will be driving 1.0L turbo or electric cars. Feeling like time is running out and I am loosing.

I first fell in love with Mustangs when my older brother gifted me his 69 Mach 1 428CJ when he moved to Alaska. I know, wow, what a brother. But hold on the car's passenger side was wrecked. His girl side swiped a pole. I was 18 at the time and had no real money to speak of to get her repaired at a body shop. It was 1975 I believe. So I searched a bunch of junk yards for the door and fender that I needed and went to work fixing her up. In a way my brothers gift was more of me learning to wrench than the car itself. Anyway, next came a 83 fox body 5.0 HO 4 speed. Blew the weak ass 7.5" rear end and put in a SVO 8.8" quad shock unit. Man was that car fun after. Then the 2011 Mustang came along and the retro styling had me hooked. My present 2021 GT/CS is the best of the bunch. It's refined enough to daily drive, but crazy fun when you want it to be. I've had other cars and trucks along the way, you know family life dictated 4 doors. But the Mustang is in my blood, maybe because I've bled so much wrenching on them that we share the same blood type now. Every Mustang that I've owned I drove for 10 years or more. And the two I have now may be my last. The 2011 is now my winter beater. I know it's way to good to be called a beater, it still runs and drives great, but you know it shows it's age here and there. Now, Ford has to do something amazing for me to go buy another one after what they did to the S650. That car does not invoke any feelings in me like the cars in my past.

I've always liked the Mustang growing up. In my twenties, similar to @2021CSGTJH12, I had a choice to buy a Mustang or my first house. Got the house and a Miata instead, lol. Then came all the other priorities and a sporty car didn't make sense anymore. I did get into motorcycles and then trackdays on bikes. I have since been riding a long time and am certainly a motorcycle guy first, but owning a Mustang was always in the back of my mind.

Guess I'm just another "old-head" finally able to scratch that itch, but my '16 GT Premium non-PP that I acquired from the original owner last year has been everything I wanted. Big gnarly V8, manual transmission, RWD, and comfortable for two for a weekend getaway. Quick enough to be fun, but not anything too excessive. I can't remember the last time I've looked forward to driving a car, washing/detailing it or adding/upgrading bits as much as I do now. Even just commuting to work is fun if I can take the back roads. It's the kind of car I always take a glance back at after parking., If a vehicle doesn't do that for me then it's probably not the right vehicle.

I have no idea how long I'll keep this thing, as my car bucket list is still percolating in the back of my head. But this is definitely the right car at the right time for me.
