Good information all. Do oil changes myself? I used to wrench on all my motorcycles. But, I had the space, see a MC is oh, 2-3 wide. Can get to all the engine stuff just by pulling up a stool. For the Mach, I ain't got the space to do the work really. But interestingly enough, to allow me to see what the dealership botched, I found a couple local maintenance car bay rentals for doing one's own work. I was going to check it out myself on a lift. But decided to just take it in. You can rent a bay and they have a lift and tools. Going to start doing my oil myself next time. Yee hah!

Most dealerships give there mechanics minimal time to carry out any servicing work, a local BMW dealership was giving there mechanics 20 mins to do a full service and if the car needed brakes they were given 15 mins per wheel. I suspect the customer got billed more than 1 hour 20 mins.
They get away with it in the majority of cases because modern vehicles need minimal servicing and once they are out of warranty its not the manufacturer who has to pick up the bill.
Just because a used car has a book full of main dealer service stamps would not make me look at it favorably, I would prefer to see stamps from independents. They have a reputation to keep and in most cases do a better job.

On what year WRX?.. My 2018 was the easiest ever, fumoto valve and having the filter right there when you pop the hood... it was great.
I think it was a 2004.
I was in the market for a sporty 4-door in 2008. The 2008 STi was really ugly, and Subaru didn't un-f**k their filter placement until about 2015.

I want to relay my recent experience with an oil change. It was the Mach's first oil change. Took it to the dealer and they said 1 to 1.5 hours. I waited. Car ready. On the way home I smell burning oil in the car. Ok, that's kind of an issue. I think it just may be some spilled oil during the service. Get home and park the car in the garage. Few days later, I take it for a drive and the smell is there again. I pull over and open the hood stick my nose in there and no real oil smell. Can't see any oil either. I smell the front wheel wells, no smell. I smell under the car, no oil smell. I run it home. Pulling in to the garage I notice oil small patches on the concrete. I get under the car from the side and can see a few oil drips coming from the back end of the belly pan by the oil plug. But the plug and pan are clean. I grab a flash light and move to the front of the engine and shine down to the filter area - oil has pooled in the belly pan. Ok, maybe the filter is loose. 😠

At this point I got to get it back to the dealer to see what the hell is going on. I'm not happy to drive the car not knowing what the issue is, but I take it back.

Well, I tell them its leaking oil and tell them its pooling on the belly pan. And I said what ever is the issue you need to take the belly pan off and clean it all up.

So, in the end, the plug and filter were tight. They just spilled a ton of oil when they changed the oil - likely at the filter.

They admitted the horrible job and all is well now.

I (now) know the oil filter is in a rough spot on the front of the engine and accessible only through a small access hatch. Removing the filter can get dodgy and oil will run down on the engine. But, come on Ford dealership. Btw, I'm not going to mention them, we settled up and they made it ok.

I'll probably start changing the oil myself. But owners beware if you take it to a dealer or quick change oil place or mechanic, make sure you feel with them doing the work.

Yep, that's all for today... 🤨
I have tried 3 different Ford Dealers in trying to get a clean oil change for my GT350 - not ONE has been able to do it without spilling a @$#% load of oil into my belly pan that eventually then drips on to my garage floor. Infuriating! This is after I tell them this has happened to me in the past.

If there are any Ford Service centers on this forum - let us know. We'd love to find someone who can actually change the oil of the cars Ford manufactures.

I use an absorbent cloth which is for oil slip it up under the filter and it usually works ok . unless I drop the filter on the way out.

I've always thought about that as a business venture, but do not have the cash flow for that. It's a great idea for "car people" to do their own work and not worry about dealerships and what not.

Those bay rental prices aren't bad either @zenwhipper

I guess there are people out there that don't work on thier own stuff, even the simplest of things....
Yep. They don't have the space, the tools, or the desire. Kind of like me when it comes to painting, although I have the space and tools, I hate doing it.

Poke a hole in the filter to let it drain.
Loosen it first, just in case.

In reference to the post about renting a lift space:

I'd love to do this too, but I fear for the liability.

I went to one of those places when I was in high school, to change the transmission fluid in my car. The floor on that place was covered in grease, oil, etc. and incredibly slippery. Back then, you fall, you get up. These days you fall, you sue.

I used rental bays on post(they called it a hobby shop) while in the Army at Ft. Bragg. It was awesome! They kept the bays spotless. It was like $15 for 8hrs(2001) and that included tool rental.

I've changed oil on my '21 GT Premium 3x so far and never a mess removing the filter through the trap door. I run the front end up on race ramps. With the oil plug on the rear of the pan I figure I"m getting maximum drainage with the angle?

Those green funnels are a waste of money. I spent $8 on a roll of aluminum foil that’ll allow me to do 60 oil changes without ever having to waste a piece of paper towel or drop of simple green.
