Thinking about possibly trading or selling my 2021 mustang GT soon. It currently has catless headers and wondering if I’ll have to put the stock headers back in as it’s not cheap to do? Anyone got experience with this ?

Carvana will take it even if you have a body in the trunk.

But really, yeah you can trade it in. Dealers may reduce the amount In order to re-install cats ect. (But they would probably just send it to auction)

Some states(maybe country?) it is against the "law" for dealers to sell cars without all emmisons equipment in working order. Unless sold as off road use only.

I see you're in CA. CA does require the seller to pass a smog test. A smart buyer would not buy the car without that certification. However, how that's enforced is another discussion. If the car is less than four years old there is some sort of workaround, but your cars is four years old so that's immaterial.

If I sell my car, do I have to get it inspected first?
Yes. If you are selling your car, you need to give the new owner a valid smog certification when you sell the car.

It’s all gonna be up to the person or dealer. Hopefully you saved your stock manifolds with cats or maybe even you have the high flow cats that came with your headers? And then include one of the other.

In general, the closer to stock a vehicle is, the more potential buyers.

I generally avoid modded cars because I don't know who did the work and I don't know how well (or poorly) it was done.

Not throwing any shade. That's just me.

Massachusetts won't let you sell a car without cats (but if it's more than 15 years old, they don't need to be working).

I had a co-worker who traded-in a Jeep without cats. Two years later the dealer called demanding he pay for reinstallation of the cats as the person they sold it to had just failed an inspection where the garage actually went to physically look for them instead of just taking the emissions result. They threatened him with a small claims lawsuit and his lawyer just told him to pay them for the reinstallation (a few grand with labor) instead of waiting for the judge to smack him harder.

YMMV

Half the dealers can’t tell anyways. I sold mine with a cat back exhaust and the dealer told the girl I sold it to that it had no cats. Dealers don’t hire competent mechanics.

this right here if you are interested. Carvana bought my 2019 GT that would’ve failed all emissions in California. No questions asked and I was worried when she ran the OBDII reader because I’m sure she could see all the codes it had thrown.

nice! Surprised they even had a code reader

Carvana has always given me a better price than a dealer. And the convenience makes up for the small amount more I could get private.

I think I did. I paid $39K for my car and I put a few mods on it including a tune and it had 73,000 hard miles on it and they offered me 24,800 and I jumped at it because I already had the M1. Plus I was moving to Florida.
