The taxes are not that much of a concern to me really. If I could get 1.5-2.5k more than the dealer offered or more then that'd be good for me.

:kickrock::kickrock::kickrock:Just depends. I sold my 06 GT private party for 10.5k 2months ago. Dealer was only offering 7-8k on trade. So now I have a larger down payment. Only bad thing is it was my daily-driver & I've been forced to drive my dads work pick-up (01 tundra) for the past few months. I'm so glad I didn't settle on the dealer offer & chose to be pro-active and sell the car individually. That was the best decision for my particular situation, may differ since you have a newer car. Now I just continue to absorb the rest of the wait until my damn car gets here. :frusty:

Keep in mind, Dealerships are not around to pay market value. they have to flip the car and turn a profit. Its not screwing you, they would never make money/stay in business if they paid fair market value for anything.

You're right about that. I fully expect them to flip the car if I were to trade. My wife and I had a 2010 Escape that started having issues. It was out of warranty and had a lot of miles. It was my wife's daily driver and she's a special needs teacher so she has to drive to different schools. The repairs were more than we wanted to spend so we ended up getting a 14' Escape. (they're pretty awesome by the way). The dealer gave us 10.5k on the trade (more than I expected). My wife saw that they sold it for 15k.

Don't know what your tax laws are like, but where I live, the tax benefit of trading in a car can offset (or come reasonably close to) any additional amount that could have been made by doing a private sale. Here, the amount of the trade-in is deducted from the taxable value of the new car purchase. So for instance, for a $20K trade, that's over $1200 tax savings off the bottom line of the new car purchase price.

That being said, unless the dealer's offer is really good, for a 2010 I'm guessing you would probably get more out of it in the end by selling it privately.

But selling a car can be a real hassle, and you have to decide if the extra you might get is worth the effort to you.
You're absolutely right... unless... you drive a piece of shit :headbonk:. Dealer offered under 1k for my '02 V6 when buying wife's car, put it on CL for 3200... no bites. Marked down to 2800, sold in an hour, first buyer had cash in hand. In your example, the 1200 difference is justified, but typically the dealer is aiming to make a lot more than that. The delta on every car I've ever traded has far exceeded that 1200, and I've never traded anything worth more than 20k

I've got my car on order like most of you. Got no idea when to expect the new car to be in but I wanted to get some opinions about whether I should trade my car or try to sell it myself. My dealer's given me a tentative amount of what to expect for a trade with my current car. It's a 2010 Camaro 2LT 6spd (roughly 41,000 miles). I've never sold a car myself but I believe I could probably get more if I did sell it myself. The amount I was given for a trade wouldn't leave any negative equity but any more that I could possibly get on my own would be better. Any suggestions or input would be great! Thanks.
That's a VERY popular car, especially among young people. The car I sold above had a 5th gear issue and various cosmetic issues - if your car is more or less cherry, there are tons of young twenty-somethings out there wanting to get a good deal on their first post-college indulgence. Sell that car private - start on CL, maybe buy the minimum cars.com listing or something. Hopefully you have enough cash laying around to play that game for one or two months. You'll be making hundreds of dollars per hour.

Thanks. I appreciate all the suggestions. I've got a VIN now and a build date with a time frame of early November so it'll be decision time here pretty soon.

Alright, so I put the Camaro up for sale this past Saturday. I think it's reasonably priced. No bites yet. We'll see.

Great thread. I never even thought about what I was saving on taxes. I'm still undecided on what I want to do though. I REALLY, REALLY, REALLY hate dealerships and I'm sure their offer would just upset me so I'd like to sell it myself, but it always takes me forever to sell a car privately. As stated above: decisions, decisions.

And on a side note, if anyone is interested in an '06 Jeep Wrangler Rubicon w/ only 50k, send me a PM. :D

Is that really true?
Yeah, probably 2 'classes' down from what your car really is, i.e. they'll buy a good-excellent car at 'fair'.

Sell the maro yet?

Is the private party value that they'd buy at on the lower end of the spectrum or higher..? I'd imagine it'd have to be on the low end. I just saw that the dealer I ordered from will buy your car from you also. My guess is that they wouldn't give me any more than if it were traded.
