Tried to program a spare key for 2016 Mustang and failed, any advice?

so I have two working fobs and bought a Amazon 3rd. Programming videos showed putting each of the two working fobs in slot below cupholder start button > 5 seconds > start button (repeat for 2nd working) then place new fob and repeat start button thing.

Did I misunderstand the instruction or just get a bad fob? Thanks for any advice

Check that the keys have the same/similar FCC frequency tags on them and ensure the batteries are good. You shouldn't have a remote start key if your car doesn't support that, for example.

To further help with MiamiGT350's point, manual cars get the 4 button key fobs (lock, unlock, trunk and alarm) while automatic cars will get the 5 button key fobs with the added remote start button.

OP I doubt that your 3rd key fob from Amazon came with a battery inside it. Crack it open and check. I believe*** they take the CR2032 batteries, but check the key fob requirement. It should say inside the fob which battery is needed.

The battery was there and there is a light on the fob which comes on when the buttons are pressed. However I just noticed there was no FCC id on the Amazon unit. Went back to website and the description showed it with the phrase "compatible with". That FCC code does not match the code on my working fob. I'm just going to box it up and order another in 4 button format to try again.
