Yes, I was quite surprised.

I bought the tin to keep the key in it in the house and it’s pointless, I can put the key in the tin with the lid on, start the car and drive away.
That's sad on Ford's part.

I just tried a little experiment of my own on our WRX, which has proximity lock/unlock and push-to-start as well. Just one layer of aluminium foil  was enough to prevent entry or (upon unlocking the door and getting in) startup. And that was with the wrapped fob in my shirt pocket.

Some time back I added two small sheet metal rectangles to my wallet to put the credit cards between. I imaging they're doing what I hope they're doing, but I don't have any way of testing to find out.

I ordered a couple from Amazon; they look like the one you have in the pic. I will give them a try. If they work, looks like I will have to order 7 more to cover all the Fobs. Dang, that reminds me I have a lot of Fobs.

Perhaps when the fob batteries age a little the tin would be more effective, but I have bought the pouches now anyway - and the type I bought work well (even with new keys ... lol) :like:

Or just buy 1 bag large enough for all of the fobs.
I tried a metal tin and aluminum foil, neither prevented the car from starting. I now keep the spares in a safe towards the center of the house.

Moving you key away from the car isn’t enough. The tools that they use act as a repeater so as long as they can get one within range of your key and the other in range of your car, they will bounce the signal to the car anyway.

I get the impression that electronic theft in the US is a little behind the U.K.

The security weaknesses that come with keyless entry are a little concerning over here, enough so that a proportion of owners opt to drop the keyless entry functionality in favour of a bit more security :frown:

The three cars are located in two different states. I wanted to be able to locate each Fob for each car in different locations, thus reducing the chance of losing all at the same time....not likely to happen but who know. But you are right, I could have one bag that holds the 3rd Fob for each car in a place like the safe, as you have. That would reduce the number of bags needed by 2.

The fob can't be touching the tin, otherwise the tin is just an antenna. Line the tin with some closed cell foam, and it should work. I've done it with the car fobs, and my cell phone. No signal gets to the items in the lined tin.

Does the key being in a silicon pouch qualify as not touching the tin ? If so, a new fob will still penetrate a standard tobacco tin :frown:

Faraday pouch killed the same fob dead on the same day under the same conditions :like:

Yes you can program a key if you only have one key. You need forscan and not the free edition

Yeah keep the keys far enough inboard from your house walls - I have seen videos of people walking around the hose walls / windows trying to pick the signal up.

Someone told me the microwave is a great place for them as it’s a professionally designed faraday cage ... lol.

The bags work (or at least mine do) - they are also easily checked and I suppose I should do that periodically to ensure the lining doesn’t break down with age.

Tins don’t work, I have tried.

I lined the key storage area with lead roof flashing, including the cabinet door that covers the key storage, good luck getting a signal from any fob in that cabinet.

I have pouches from Amazon as well. They work very well. I tested mine by having my key in a pouch inside the cupholder, on the seat, in my pocket and in every case the car did not recognize that there was a key. And this was after I used the fob to unlock it.
