I just want to add. I was out in Pittsburg over Christmas. , the amount of salt on the roads was very high. It's a very hilly area. It's salt city. Salt 1/2 inch deep on hills. Don't blame Mike for keeping it parked. I live 250 miles east and had a blast driving car today. No salt and 55 degrees out.

Fluid Film (and comparative substances) are a huge help and I have seen success with them in the past.

I grew up in Indiana and understand what salt and rust can do. I have one vivid memory of applying JBWeld to a gas tank with numerous rust pinholes on the side of the road. My brother's 8 y/o car frame broke in half one spring time as well. Back then Ziebart was a new thing and I don't believe many people knew then the problems trapping moisture behind that would cause. I ran south in the late '70's and left the rust belt behind. I only learned of fluid film in the last couple of years from watching South Main Auto on YouTube. Some of the 7 & 8 y/o cars he has shown that are nearly rotted out doesn't point to newer cars being made more rust resistant. But the ones that are fluid filmed and kept up look close to what you find in the south. If I were still up north I would definitely have any car I owned done. They're just too expensive to only expect that short a lifetime.

My neighbor across the street has a New Edge that one of his kids drives every day. Body panels are spotless, no indication of rust of any kind, and that car is 20+ years old at this point. I haven’t looked at the undercarriage but with the body panels looking like they do, I’m guessing the undercarriage is in pretty good shape too. Again, I’m in the Chicago suburbs, we lay the salt down as thick as anyone.

Everyone is free to do what they want with their cars, my personal opinion is life’s too short and I’m going to drive what I have while I can. Tomorrow is promised to no one. Just my thoughts

Cars stored outside typically do much better. Rust is an endothermic reaction so the colder it is, the slower it goes (and liquid water will freeze and pause the reaction). My Taurus hasn't been fluid filmed and winter driven and it still has intact rockers and floors and looks pretty good underneath. Although it's definitely not as bad here as say Chicago or upstate new York.

I wouldn't really recommend fluid filming a Mustang because apparently it can clog the pressure sensor for the evap system on top of the gas tank, and that requires you to drop it to clean it or replace it. I guess you could try to avoid that area but it gets everywhere lol

It really comes down to what car you want to sacrifice to the salt. My 1990 f150 I bought new still hasn't rusted out . I have put some effort into saving it.

My 03 gt convertable no rust. Never seen winter.
23 mach 1 , trying to keep out of salt. But at my age starting to wonder who am I saving it for

I'm 100% with you there. I'm hoping to land in an M3 next year, and well, that's going to get driven in the snow too. 😀

My 2024 Bronco sits outside while my shelby sleeps. It's going to be a long winter since I've been without my 350 since july.... but when April hits.. man it's going to be glorious!

Funny in Phoenix it is the opposite. Winter is the time for the cars to party, summer with 110*+ temps makes the car slow down a ton.

Not sure how well this link will work but a good example of what @Gregdd is talking about here in Western PA…

It was 55 here today. Took the car out on a couple of errands and then gave it a good wash. It’s not my DD, it does not see salt. Looking forward to Spring.

No better CAI than winter! Never seen rust on any of my cars driven in n winter ever but they do get washed weekly incl wheel wells and sprayed underneath.

If I can't drive it in winter I cant afford it or it's irreplaceable..

Mustang is fully galvanized and corrosion protected with both the metal alloy composition and coatings as well as the various alloy chassis parts.

Only need to hand wand wash / rinse wheel wells and underneath while standing on the outside.

These cars are for the most part disposable as well. While rust was an issue 40 years ago, today it is only an issue on poorly repaired parts or the infrequent defective coatings which is the cause of rust on all 20 yr old and newer vehicles and maybeee poor hygiene.

If they are not disposable new price is 80K+ and will be coddled their entire lives until they depreciate to 5% of new value.

I am under my car every 8 weeks for oil change and it's pristine after 3 hard winters with so much calcium chlorine and salt on the roads the skys are perpetually dusty and AccuWeather constantly rating air particulate and pollution as poor at best.

Just take a big milage never repaired one from Miami put it on a lift and show me any material corrosion, or one from the NE.

The paint and glass on my 23 still looks exactly like it did the day I picked it up. Chipping ice and snow off a frozen car can cause damage. Not always easy to do.
