I have a question for the turbo and SC crowd. Are any of you guys still running a front crash bar with a 6” thick intercooler?

Wondering if running without one will cause buffeting of the front bumper, especially at high speeds?

Most will use the bmr support. Yes the bumper will be loose in the middle. If you get into a wreck the frame rails will peel like a banana.
I see that the product description for most of the lightweight bumper supports say that they don’t provide any protection in the event of a crash. I don’t have a problem retaining the factory crash bar if that’s even possible.

I found these spacers to move the bumper out, but not sure they will fir with a 6” intercooler in place.

Wouldn't a good quality 4" intercooler provide enough cooling for your build? I would think paired with the nitrous you'd be all set.

I already have the intercooler that was designed for the turbo kit in hand and it’s 6” thick (rated to support 1750 hp). It‘s a very solid piece too. I weighed it and it’s 32.2 lbs. front end is gonna be heavy with everything installed (maybe 120 lbs or so).

Too little to late, but a Shearer Fabrications intercooler woulda fit the bill, single inlet 1200-1600HP, true bolt on, but spendy.

This one was supposed to have the mounting tabs welded on, but it was drop shipped straight to me from Treadstone. I’ve reached out to BL Fab about having them send me the mounting tabs and I’ll just have them welded on myself since I want to add a couple of threaded standoffs for additional support at the bottom.

Virtually any aftermarket crash bar will provide a good bit more protection than running no crash bar at all. But I don’t blame the aftermarket manufacturer for saying that since they don’t want any liability.

I put a 1-1/2" x 1/8" bar across the lower left and right supports. I then made a bracket and mounted my mishimoto oil cooler to that. It now gets it's airflow from the bottom right grill area.

Do you have a pic of it?

Yes, but I am away this week and did not bring my laptop. But, I did post them in my FI Interchiller thread if you want to look that thread up.

@NGOT8R - the Steeda replacement bar uses all four bolts on each side (i.e. it will help to stop the chassis legs from peeling open on the ends).

@DougS550 - When you say the left and right supports that are low down, are you referring to the front ends of the subframe ?

@NGOT8R - If Doug says yes, I might have something that could at least start your train of thought going :like:

Pending a response from Doug, I think he is referring to the mounts on the front most part of the subframe :

If so, BMR sell a brace for there (but from my armchair, I really can't see how the subframe will benefit from that).

The front ends are slotted for U nuts, I think the Ecoboost must have something there as the (euro) GT's don't.

I then started thinking of something like this :

The purple profiles at the back of the upper image are the end of the subframe.

I'm thinking of going for the lower design (or a variant of it) which gives a mounting hole on each side, with clearance for some nice colour coded cup washers.

I'm considering adding something like this as I am (pipe dream) considering the future use of an intercooler ...

I've also got some other mounts to consider - I added four of these into the back of my Steeda crash bar :

Hopefully that gives you some ideas ?
