Tomorrow I will be attempting to change the transmission fluid & filter on my ‘18 GT Premium Convertible PP1 with the help of my father. We are both used to Toyotas and I’m still somewhat new to Fords as of this Mustang being my 3rd over the past 2 years. We are both very aware of what we are getting into and the difficulty of the project. I’m not hoping, but am prepared for in case I’m missing parts or something goes wrong to have a second vehicle for me to use.

Vehicle Info
I purchased this vehicle almost a year ago (June 30th) at 72k miles and it’s currently at 84k. A am very certain that the transmission fluid was never changed. I am the 3rd owner. The first owner was a woman who owned it up until the warranty expired and maintained it well. The last owner has serviced it alright, as in getting it new tires and oil with records the whole ownership. When I got it, I did drive it a pretty rough for a bit until the speeding tickets came (I’m 21 and still not fully developed). Now I drive reasonably but still have fun with it occasionally. I recently got a corsa exhaust and it makes it tempting to speed

Transmission Issues
About 4k miles ago, my transmission started shifting much harsher and it just kept getting worse. At first it would be just upshifting certain gears but then it was park and reverse. I fixed it by getting Forscan and reset the adaptive learning and updated the PCM and a few other modules. Since then it’s shifted great. I also found out that I can actually shift from second to first. Before when I did it with the paddles it would be extremely rough.

My Parts for this job
PPE Stock Depth Transmission Pan
SunCoast Transmission Filter
Transmission oil cooler O-ring replacement
Valvoline ULV Fluid - There are mixed options but based on my research it is totally okay to use this.

Advice?
I’m doing this job based off a pretty good YouTube video I found that explains it very well on an F150 5.0 10r80. It definitely seems tough but I’ve handled similar difficulty levels before so I think I can do this. If there’s anything you can think of that I’m missing please let me know. Thanks!

To make the job less messy you can get one of those things to suck the fluid out. It has to be done underneath cuz the dip stick is very short. When you get the pan off replace it with one with a draIn bolt.

Maybe post a week ago?

The giant finger in your car pic seems a tad out of place ..

I’ll look into that suction, thanks. I’d definitely like to keep my father’s garage as clean as possible. My new PPE Pan has a drain bolt so I’m hoping next time is only for just another fluid change.

Check the main 10R80 FAQ’s thread on here, Post 1, Page 1 and scroll down to the fluid info sections. Just because there is a YT vid for an F150 doesn’t mean everything is the same for a Mustang. For one, the trans dipsticks are different therefore the fill level is at a different spot between the 2 vehicles. Also you must use the fluid that is recommended by Ford for an 10R80 and in the owners manual (it’s also noted in the thread).

Also in same thread are links RE: 10R80 aftermarket trans pans if you’re looking for additional info.

True but the dipstick tube is very short and has to be done underneath. With different pab the quantity my be different.

Definitely time to change. The hardest part is checking the fluid level when refilling. Keep fluid level low on the B part of dipstick when cold. When it's hot it will be up in the A part of dipstick. Giving you the right level. You can use the old pan gasket but I'd recommend getting a new one.
